The ceremony was performed before a large gathering of the friends and relatives of the young people, The Rev. Father Nowakowski officiated, reading the nuptial service of the church. The ring ceremony was used. A reception in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Nowaczyk was given at the home of the bride's parents following the church ceremony. c lub Meetings .A STUlt, WECTiAC. . M r -. F. M. Elliott opened her home Vn South Ilohman street yesterday afternoon for the meeting- of the literature committee of the Hammond Woman's club. It was the regular bimonthly study meeting to which all the members of the committee were invited. Twenty-eight members respended to roll call and there were three guests. Mrs. Elliott and Mrs. J. C. Graves were chairman and vice chairman of the day's program committee. The study for the afternoon was "Romola" by Oeorge Elliot and the. program was very Interesting and enjoyable. Miss Harriet Ferris sang a very pretty solo and responded to an encore. Mrs. J. C. Graves read a very excellent paper in which she told of the life and character of George Elliot. A review of the story of Romola waa given by Mrs. Harry Smith and her paper was enjoyed. Mrs. TV. .1. MacAber was unable to attend the meeting and Mrs., Charles Wilson read" a number of quotations she had prepnred. A poem by George Elliot was read

The beautiful new home of Mrs. M. M. Towle In Ogden street was the scene of the meeting of the Woman's .Home Missionary Society of the First M. K. church yesterday afternoon. It was the annual "Thank Offering" I meeting and the invitation to attend wax extended the members of the society and congregation. There was a good attendance of the membership and several guests were present at the meeting. Mrs. otto Muehlberger, the president of the society presided during the bttsines hour. After the transaction of the business, the meeting was given over to Mrs. George Dobbins and Mrs. Etta Pake who had charge ot the afternoons program. The members returned their thank offering envelopes and it was found that a nice sum had been realized for missionary work. After the following program a pleasant time was spent socially and the hostesses served a dainty two course luncheon. Mrs. M. M. Towle and Mrs; Cresson were the hostesses for the afternoon. Mrs. Kusmaul retain ed the hostess prize as is customary at the meetings and Mrs. Peter Halfman won the first prize.. The consolation prize was awarded to Mrs. Joseph Miller. Dinner Dance
It is now expected that the dinner dance, which the University club expected to hold on Nov. 16, will have to be postponed to some later date on account of lack of time. The entertainment 'committee will meet In a day or, so and set another date that will give U time enough to make the necessary preparations. It Is expected that the date will be along about Thanksgiving time. The membership .of the University club Is being augmented by the addition of a number of very desirable persons. A large number of applications have been received lately and are being acted upon as rapidly as possible. With the opening of the social season, the interest in the club's affairs" has growii apace, and it.nay be safely be said that never. Is Postponed
The program of weekly entertainment is proving very popular. Tomorrow night the bi-monthly card party of the club will atract a large attendance. The regular Tuesday afternoon meeting of the ladies of the club is proving to be very popular and last Tuesday there were over thirty of the wives, sisters and mothers of the members present. Mrs. Frank Gavlt and Mrs. John Hall of Whiting entertained. A new policy has been inaugurated by which the program of entertainment at. these affairs Is to be varied. Formerly the only form of amusement was bridge, whist. This attracted only those who are interested in playing bridge. Now. however, the program of entertainment la being varied from time to time, and this idea is proving very popular. It serves the purpose of .interesting every lady member ot the auxiliary organization In Its activities. Miss Haines came to serve as maid of honor at the marriage of Miss lone Hunt and M. P. Ludwig. Mr. and Mrs. Fred W. Xewell are entertaining Mr. Newell's father of Kalamazoo, Mich., at tiieir home In South Ilohman street. CARD OF THANKS. LEAGUE HAS ENTERTAINMENT Last evening saw the opening of tha entertainment course which the Epworth League of the First Methodist Episcopal church has planned for the winter. An audience that taxed the capacity of the church in Russell street listened to the orchestral concert given by the Misses Mauer. The success of the course is assured if the attendance at the succeeding entertainments is as great as that of last evening. The season tickets have been sold at an exceedingly low price, but th members expect to realize a large sum to be used for the church benefit, &s more than 900 tickets have already been disposed of. The entertainment last evening was the first of four. The dates will be filled by the Redpath Lyceum Bureau of Chicago. On the evening of Dec. 19 Smith Danron, the potter craftsman, will entertain, Wednesday evening, Jan. 11, the program will be given by A. J. Fischer, interpreter. Colby, the cartoonist, will give an entertainment Jan. 30. The church was made very beautiful with potted palms, ferns and immense bunches of white chrysanthemums in honor of the occasion. What can bo said to have been the most enjoyable number of any course given in Hammond was that given by the Maurer sisters. Tho company Is composed of four sisters, the Misses Gladys. Edith, Frames and Inez Maurer of South Bend, Ind., each an artist in her line of work. Their program began at 8:15 o'clock after Charles Surprise, a member of the Epworth League, had introduced the concert party. They gave the entire program, every number of which was enthusiastically received. They appeared in solo, work duets and orchestra- nd every number was encored. The playing of Miss Gladys Maurer was a treat. She played both the violin and cello. Miss Frances Maurer, cornetlst, also gave two readings, which were among the attractive numbers on the program. Miss Edith Maurer delighted the audience with her whistling and her flute solos were beautiful. Miss Inez Maurer was the accompanist. The crowds are skating at the East

pnedy was appointed as a delegate to attend the convention of library trustees in progress in Indianapolis this week. Mrs. Kennedy left for Indianapolls at 10 o'clock this morning. Miss Anne Swezey. the librarian, left a few days ago to participate in the convention of librarians which preceded the meeting of the library trustees. She had a part in the "program, having a paper on -Library Work With the Children." At the meeting last night nothing was done out of the regular routine of business, the building matter being still in abeyance. It Is expected, however, that there will b something doing in the near future as Mr.' Carnegie and his secretary, James Bertram, returned during October from Europe, where they spent the summer. During their absence not only has activity in the local libraries been held up, but it i3 understood that there are about fifty library buildings in various parts of the county similarly situated. Now that Messrs. Carnegie and Bertram have returned, however, they expect to get down to business. MEDICAL SOCIETY ENTERTAINS Tomorrow the Lake County Medical society is to be the host to a number of notable physicians from all parts of the state. Members of the association have gone down in their pockets to pay the expenses of entertaining the guests of the association. There will be a meeting at the rooms of the University clxib tomorrow afternoon, at which a number of important papers will be read. Then the banquet will be held at the Masonic temple at 6 o'clock, and the meeting will be continued during the evening. At this meeting an organization, to be known as the Tenth District Council, similar to councils organized in other districts over the state, will be organized. The meeting is regarded as the most important one that has ever been held in Lake county. It takes on added importance in view of the fact that the president of the Indiana State Medical society lives In Hammond. Banquet Tonight. Insurance officials of the Chicago Mid West Company will banquet nearly a hundred stockholders of their million dollar corporation at the Carleton Hotel tonight. The program is unannounced but Inklings of promised loys In the form of speeches by noted financiers of Chicago have been given credance. Throughout the ' Calumet region stock has been disposed of by the organisers of the Insurance company. The guests will therefore represent every city having traction connections with Hammond. Announcements are to.be made tonight that will reveaf the exact character and size of the project. M. F. PIERCE VERY LOW Hope is no longer, extended . to the Hammond friends of M. F. Pierce -for his recovery from a stroke of paralysis which caused his illness in Cleveland a month ago. Mr. Pierce was. former deputy revenue collector for the sixth Indiana district. Mrs. A. O. Merrill and mond, are at his bedside in Merrlllville today. A relapse occurred last night that is thought will result in his death.
