Fast work on the part of the Gary
fire companies last night saved the
Tolleston Lumber company yards from
destruction after a blaze in the stables
had caused considerable damage and more excitement. The alarm was turn
ed in at 6:30 p. m.
Enough incidents for a good set of motion pictures took place at on the
way to and at the fire. -A Wabash freight train delayed two companies at the Broadway crossing, ten mules were rescued, the heavens were lighted up by the burning hay so much so that the reflections from the Gary steel works had a rival. On top of this it was necessary to run reels of hose across the Michigan Central tracks. As a result two freight trains and an express flyer were held up fifteen minutes while the trains crew fretted and fumed. The second floor of the barn was badly damaged. It is believed that the loss will approximate $500. "This is one of the parts of Tolleston that has recently received water serv
ice." sair Fire Chief Feeley this morning. 'If we had no fire plugs there those yards and buildings surrounding them would have been goners."
In conformance to the usual rule the pumping station Increased its pressure
when the fire alarm was sounded. The gauge at the fire station showed a pressure of 120 pounds during the pro
gress of the blaze. An Investigation
into the origin of the blaze 19 being
made.
New York, N'o 1. The suit for dis
solution of the Steel Corporation,
brought by the United States govern
ment; the cancellation of the Hill ore
lease by the directors of the Steel Cor
poration. and the reduction of freight
rates on lake ore by the corporation's
railroads were the main features of interest in the steel industry last week.
The volume of business in finished
and semi-finished products was again sharply contracted in nearly all lines and the October statement of the Stee
Corporation is expected to show a de
crease of 10 to 15 per cent. In the ord
ers on hand.
Independent steel companies also suf
fered from business. Building contracts continued light, with fewer plans for new projects than at any time in many weeks. Specifications on existing contracts were smaller and in conse
quence mill activities have been re
duced about 10 per cent.
Th American Steel and Wire Com
pany reduced official prices of all wire products $1 a ton to meet competition
and Independent wire manufacturers
followed BUit. Buying was not stimulated, aa lower prices seemed to be anticipated. Average prices of all kinds of steel are within $2.30 a ton of the lowest point ever touched In the industry. Hansel & Elcock were award
ed the contract for ten thousand tons
fabricated steel for the Field museum
at Chicago. Among other building contracts were 2,500 tens for the Rice
hotel at Houston, Tex., which went to
the Cambria Steel Company, and 1,500 tons for the Hurd hotel at Tampa, Fla,
to the Virginia Bridge and Iron Com
pany.
Better Tone Developed. On Saturday a better tone was de
veloped. The Grand Trunk contracted
for two thousand cars wit hthc Pressed Steel Car Company and the Canadian Pacific ordered one thousand tons boiler tubes from the National Tube Company. More rail orders were placed, making the week's total 25,000 tons. Including 3.500 tons for Chile. There was fair buying of pig iron In the eastern district for several days and more than half the total of fifty thousand tons purchased was" in the eastern territory. Business fell off sharply during the last few days.
