TIMES B t n KA l AT STATE C.1MTAU Indianapolis. Inrt.. !ert. S. The talk etill continues in regard to the possibility of Charles A. Bookwalter, former mayor of this city, . becoming a candidate for the republican nomination for

governor, although tiookwalter has said that he would not be a candidate for any office. Some of his friends believe that he will change his mind If he finds the situation gtlrh at the opening: of the coming year as to give him a reasonable assurance that he could get tn nomination Without too much of ft fight. llookWalter would have many elements ot strength. One Is Bis great ability an a campaigner. He la

one of the best and most convincing' campaign- speakers lit Indiana. He can talk anywhere at any time and on any subject and he is always able, to make his rsech interesting. -He is full of energy and vim. He is a rock-ribbed republican. Bookwalter is liberal In his views, and his friends say that this would be a great element of strehgth In case he yhould enter the campaign for governor. Having been mayor of this city for ..two terms, six years ih all, he understands the needs of a city, tie knows what city government fheaiis, and It 18 pointed out that this would make htm strong In the cities and larger towns. Bookwalter. too. is a good rhtxef. and Is at ease under any and all cireuni stances. Bookwalter has received fnarty pfom ises of support in case he becomes a candidate for the nomination for gov ernor, but he is holding them off with the statement that he is not and will not be a candidate. '" ' Bookwalter Woiild stand well with union labor, since he has been a member of the typographical union for many years, and still holds his union card. . But while Bookwalter IS betlig talked of perhaps more than any other man yet mentioned for the republican nomination for governor. 1 there are others

who are also possessed of elements of: strength that are making them favorites among a large number-of republicans. Hugh Th. Miller gt Columbus Is one of these. Miller vria lieutenant governor while 3- Fran'. Hanly was governor, but there was no tie between them in regard to po" icy. Miller was acknowledged to be -probably the very best presiding officer that ever presided over the Ifi'diana senate. He was absolutely fair nd impartial and lie never hesitated to make a decision or a ruling. At both sessions of the legislature in which he presided over the won the highest esteem of both the republican and democratic members. Such democrats as Senators Fleming Slot's senburg, Ktstler and others showered ( their praises on him f or his good work. Miller would be less acceptable to the Cities and the towns of the state than Bookwalter or some other candidate,

perhaps, but he would undoubtedly be

stronger in the country. He Is a "dry

on the liquor question. He Is a banker at Columbus and Is also Interested in

a traction line from Indianapolis to Beymour. Miller is conceded to be a good business man, and A very companionable, excellent gentleman. He

. makes friends through his straightforward, honest and honorable manner

and this counts for much these days

with the people.

William L. Taylor, former attorney general, is a candidate fof the nomi

nation. Miller is not at least he has not let It be known that he would like

to have the place,. Miller Is not doing

anything to ward . landing the nomina

tion. Taylor is in Europe on a vacation trip and will not be back until October or Jiovember. Tayfor also has some elements of strength which would win voles, and he will make the next man tun some to beat him. He was a locomotive fireman in his younger days. He was born and raised In Lagrange coun

ty anri lived on a farm. Taylor is also strong with organized labor because of his railroad experience, and in campaigns he has been for years one of the speakers oft' whom the republicans have depended upon to make speeches in labor centers of the state. Taylor Is rich, being quoted here all the way from $300,000 to $800,000. but he has made every cent of It In business and In fortunate Investments. He is one of Hatecraft and politics. There are many

who believe that this Is the time for a farmer to be the nominee for governor,' since Indiana has not had a farmer gov. i ernor since the time of Governor Mount. ! The fact that the present democratic administration Is spending a thousand that he has a thorough knowledge of!

the leading lawyers of Indiana, and during his term as attorney general his office made a good record. ,

Vp to this time these are the three men most talked of for the nomination for governor. Senator Will It. Wood of , Lafayette is mentioned, but he does not know whether he w ill be a candidate or not. He said some time ago that he' would like to be governor, but that he j would not make up his mind on beins ; a candidate until later on, when he would size up the situation and see just J

how the signs of the times looked to him. Then there is State Senator Daniel Orumpacker of Laporte county, also.

economy. They insist that a farmer M governor would do this better than a !

lawyer or anybody else. This has helped to spread the talk about Crumpacker as a possibility, and there are a good

! many who believe that If the party de

cides on a farmer nominee the choice will fall on your "Uncle Dan." It is believed, too, that the situation in the race for the nomination for gov

ernor next season will have a great i deal to do with the reorganisation of ( the republican state committee next! January. There is a strong sentiment j

expressed among repuoncans inai xne candidate for governor ought to have the right to sav who shall be the chair mart of the state committee, just as the nominee for president picks the man for national chairman. Of course, it -would be difficult to do this in January ahead of the convention, because no one can tell who win Je nominated at the next convention, but there la a feeling that by next January there will probably be a crystlllifcatiofl ot the sentiment toward ohe or the other of the candidates for governor, and that it will be strong enough to enable one to make a clear guess on who will be nominated for governor. A- far as is known now there Is no , serious objection on the part ot any of the men mentioned to tdwin M. Lee's re-election as state c'lairman. but you never can tell what may happen Ih the next few months, senate as lieutenant govefnor Miller He probably would be acceptable to all ot them. However, if he is not acceptable to the on ho Appears to be in

the lead nextJah uary It is believed that the leading candidate will be given an opportunity to. express his preference as to a state chairman. This has developed into one of the interesting fea

tures of the entlfe situation, for there Is a growing belief that the nomination for governor end the state chairmanship ought to go together.
