Indiana Harbor, Aug. 2S. The crowd
of 3,500 persons who had made their
preparations to attend the Inland picnic at Michigan City this morning were
doomed to disappointment when upon
arriving at the blast furnace docks they
were told that the Theodore Roosevelt,
which had been chartered to take the
crowd to the scene of festivities, would not make the trip. The high sea was responsible for the decision, the ship's officers deciding after they arrived at the Harbor that an attempt to breast the waters would be foolhardy, in view of the unwieldiness of the crowd. The crowd which swarmed the grounds when this decision was made and which numbered at the time fully twenty-five hundred, was turned back with Instructions to go to the ball grounds, and those In charge of the undertaking began to telephone for other accommodations. At first It was determined to try for Lakewoods park, but as there is no diamond on these grounds the plan was abandoned. Negotiations were entered into, however, with the South Shore line to send nineteen big coaches to line up in front of the ball park and the crowd waited there for the arrival of these cars, after which they swarm
ed aboard and tho trip to Michigan! City was ony, the only difference being that It was by rail instead of by water. It was 11 o'clock before the cars arrived, but in the meantime the crowd was jolly and was having a good time, taking their disappointment good humoredly and accepting the situation In the best of spirits. In the meantime a number of automobiles with banners and streamers announcing the change of plans were sent all over the Harbor, so that all who did not understand the turn affairs had taken, woulJ be
arpnseo. . The program today includes a baseball game between the office men and the mill men, and athletic .events of all kinds, races, contests, etc., for which valuable prizes have been offered. The mill officers explained that the Theodore Roosevelt, could have gotten to the docks all right in spite of the tremendous breakers which were pounding the breakwaters and the shores with a sound that resembled the booming of cannon. The trouble would have been In riding the waves with the big crowd on board. The boat in its top-heavy condition, with a big
share of the outers on the upper deck,
Anxiously awaiting the conference
scheduled for the week between officials of six labor crafts and Vice President
Julius Kruttschnitt of the Union Pa
cific railroad, workmen on the Harrl-
man system of railroads prepared to
day for a strike which they believe
cannot b averted.
While Vice President Kruttschnitt
has agreed to confer with the men and discuss the situation, It is understood
that the railway managers have de
cided to reject the proportions for a recognition of the fedeisceT crafts, and
an Increase in salary.
The international presidents of the unions are now speeding toward Lou Angeles, where the conference Is to be held some day this week, s Upon the result of the meeting hinges the strike
of 25,000 men.
Members of the employes' committee
of the Illinois Central are meeting today preparatory to calling upon the
officials of the road, and making de
mands for recognition and more wages
