ot confirm the report, and It Is de
clared that the present deal came. up suddenly and was closed with scarcely any parley on either side. The boats
re 10,000 tons burden, of strongest
construction and elegant finish. One
of them, the Weidner, has been laid up all summer, but the Hogwood is In
commission this season, being at pres-
nt loaded with coal. Both boats are
n Milwaukee now. It Is not known
whether they will be operated by the Inland Steel company until spring, or be
fore. -
Of the to boats, the Hogwood Is a
trifle the larger, being 576 feet long, 56 foot -beam and containing 34 hatches.
The Weidner Is 664 feet long. 56 foot
beam and has 32 hatches. With two
such steamships at their command the
Inland Will be able to haul practically
all of Its ore. This year's receipts of
ore will approximate a half million
tons when the navigation season closes, but as the new blast furnace wlbe in operation by the first of the yejl'r It Is
estimated that between 700.000 and 750,-
000 tons will be required next year to
see the mill through.
The purchase of the ore boats repre
sents only one item in the tremendous
progress that Is being made by this en
terprising company.

The. two stake races were the only ones run yesterday, the fair society returning the entry money and scratching the balance of the card . Lake county people should take their hats off to the fair officials who. have labored long and hard, gratis to make the fair a success. It Is a monumental task and they should he praised accordingly. ' . . The fair this year, on account of yesterday's splendid crowd and attendance came out of a hcfle. . Another bad day would have meant nearly a $2,500 deficit. No accidents occurred this year to mar the fair and the free attractions, although not fool-hardy seemed to satisfy the audience Many people were here from Kankakee, 111. and Valparaiso, Ind., and we claim Lake county has the best fair ground site in the country. Automobiles wer brought into play yesterday afternon to put the track in shape and nearly twenty volunteer autolsts whirled around the speedway to smooth the track bed. The track was fast and good time was made in both stake race. Tbb Times" special for the three days
made a hit and the crowd got Into the
