fand will look on today to nelp them out
in the big deficit which stares them In the face, through the wost unfavorable
weather of yesterday. ,
Start Was Auspicious. '
Never was a fair started under such an auspicious outlook than the present one, and it Is due to weather conditions alone if the 1911 Lake County Fair- is not a success. Hardly had the free performances of the acrobats and the display of fireworks finished when the rain began and kept up the continual down pour
all Wednesday evening, until yesterday
the race track wbuld hare burled ankl'a
deep with the weight of a horse. Man
or beast was- not allowed on the track
all day yesterday to keep it in the best nossible shape for today's races, an 1
tn the event of the sun shining1 for three or four hours, the famous rubber track will be in almost perfect condition for fast racing.

of the fairs in the circuit.
Band Was Diversion.
The crowd which assembled yester
day had to content themsfclve-s with the stock displays, the exhimtlon or art and crafts work at Floral Hall, and the
concert by Barnie Young's band of Hammond, whose musicians added the only touch of life to the depressed
spirits of the dampened throng. No
free performance was given yesterday afternoon and the people from the
north end of the county got a very poor
impression of the merits of the fair,
which would .have been vastly different
under good weather conditions. Hope For Good Weather.
j The fair society hopes to drawenough of a crowd at today's exhibition to partially wipe out, the big expense, but under the mot favorable condlns the flnancers of the society will be in a bad way. The two stake races and the 2:17
pace will he' run today if the weather permits, giving the spectators one of the best race cards ever contested on the track during one day. The free attractions will also be run according to program and schedules.

NONE KILLED
Somewhat of a commotion was created in Broadway yesterday afternoon when Thomas Cannon, the dean of the Gary press corps, and Major Heuck, the master blumber. got -Into a wrangle near Sixth avenue and Broadway. Details of the combat have not been given
out to the world. No pocket artillery
was unsheathed, but bystanders In the vicinity got of the firing range, both of bricks and of bullets, but all plate glass windows in the neighborhood were reported to be safe after Sam Sax had made a cursory Inspection. Although the belligerents did not get very warm over the battle, they parted without signing any peace treaty. During the action of the combat Colonel Carl J, Cooper, who was at one time a war correspondent, got out of the range of missiles by climbing up the eucalyptus tree near the Gary hotel. When the clouds rolled by Colonel Cooper volplaned down to earth. He said that he climbed the tree In order to get a better view of the hostilities. Other newspaper men in the vicinity also took to their heels at the opening
of the battle.
