HOLDS STAIRWAY
AGAINST ALL COMERS
Intoxicated and armed with a hatchet
and a screw driver. Mrs. James Robin
son. 71 Hohman street, was arrested last night about 8 O'clock after threat
ening the lives of several people and children.
Mrs. Robinson lives In a flat at 7 1
Hohman street, and is said to have a habit of getting intoxicated and then
starts to quarrel with her neighbors. Yesterday afternoon she got on one of
her celebrations, and with her hatchet and screw driver, she headed the stair
way, allowing nobody to come up or
go down.
Fearing that she would do their children harm, the neighbors called up the police station, across the street, and placed her under arrest, t'nable to furnish a bond she spent the night at the police station. " She was tried before Special Judge
Hoagerson this (horning and was fined $1 and costs, amounting to $11. She was unable ?o pay and will be taken to Crown Point this noon. She is married and her children fear tbat'she would kill somebody. About 10 years ago she spent a jail sentence at Crown Point for the same offense. The family asked that she might be taken to Crown Point, or Logansport, as they think she is also demented.
HENRY HUBER GETS FURNITURE CONTRACT
The board of public works this morning awarded the contract for the city hall furniture to Henry Huber, he having been the lowest bidder, with a figure of $1,010.20. The F. S. Betz Co. was the next lowest bidder, with a figure $10 higher. The board Is satisfied that under the stiff competition among the local firms the city is getting the benefit of a lowprice. The F. S. Betz Co. went out after the contract in earnest, and went to
the expense of taking the city officials
to the furniture exhibit in Chicago. TVith Betz going after the contract in the manner he did, the other bidders

MEETING WILL BE VERY
INTERESTING
That the attempt to establish the legal status of the medical expert which will be made at the joint meeting of tire Lake County Bar association and the Lake County Medical association
promises to prove a most Interesting Session. ' . ' ' - aWhlle the lawyer Is claiming that the medical expert is a purchasable quantity, that his testimony is often times
molded to suit the particular needs of the attorney who summons him, there will be doctors on hand who will express the opinion that the lawyer is to blame. They will tell of lawyers' tricks in an effort to discredit the honest testimony of a witness, they will show that it is the lawyer who frames up the testimony of the so-called medical expert, and that instead of attempting to further the- ends of Justice by securing real expert testimony, that the lawyer is intent only on winning his case. To Be Warm liebate. It is said that some- pretty patent illustration will be given, not only of well known cases over the country,' such as the Thaw case, but also of local instances where doctors have appeared to give, not their real opinion of a case, but a'n opinion that will favor the case of the attorney who retained them. '
Instances may be cited where lawyers have called in doctors and have pumped them in advance regarding what their testimony would be under a particularly set of circumstances. The doctor is then more or less bound( to testify that way. The question is now being discussed as to whether or not the meeting should be thrown open to the public. It is believed that some facts of a sensational nature regarding the expert witness will be brought out, and It might not be a good plan to have the facts made public. On the other hand, it is pointed out
knew they had to figure on a low margin of profit, and the six bids submitted showed little difference in the bidding.
The furniture is to arrive at once.
and la to be set up by Mr. Huber.
Other Business. The primary assessment roll of the
Sheffield avenue and Hoffman street
walks was placed on file. There having been no objections to a sewer in Roose
velt avenue, plans and specifications for
a sewer were ordered from the city engineer.
Bids for the Manilla avenue pavement
were opened and laid over until Sept.
6th. Bids were also opened for a pave
ment in the Franklin addition, block E,
to be built by the city. The bids of Iavene Bros., and the Ahlborn Construction company were found to be tied for asphalt macadam, each bid having been $2.90 per square yard. They were laid over until Aug. 28th.
