0jnea Today. Boston at Philadelphia. New York at Washington. Philadelphia, Pa., Aug. 11. In a desperate game of ball, In which it seemed fata was bound to bring defeat to the Whit Sox once more, they ! aanaged to keep up their spirit against all iinds of odds and beat the world's Champions out in the tenth inning. The final count was 5 to 4, and it was a see-taw affair all the way, the Sox battling hard for their points, while the Athletics generally had theirs handed to them. Good hitting and base running helped the Sox to their
runs. Mistakes on the part of the Sox gave the Athletics most of theirs. Big" Ed "Walsh was on the slab for Chicago and played a gallant and desperate game of ball, for besides pitching in , great form, only to have the ball thrown away by his mates, the big pitching star scored three of the five runs and made two base hits.
Jack Doyle is now umpiring in the Eastern league and making good.

drawn out, listless contest that would have been a discredit to a couple of teams playing for the cellar pennant. Chance's men bunched four hits with a pair of bases on balls on Sallee in the fourth inning, and that fortunate combination scored enough tallies to give them the victory that meant first place when the battle at Pittsburgh was decided. To win the game the P. L. had to use three pitchers, and not until M. Brown, captain of the life saving station, got on the job was there any assurance of winning or even of finishing the game. Because of Hichter's fine work as a finisher in recent games Manager

Toledo, Aug. 11. Cheerful Charley Hickman, noted slugger and everybody's friend, has quit the national game after all these years. Owner W. R. Armour gave him his unconditional release yesterday and Hickman has closed a notable career on the diamond. Hick entered, the game years ago as a pitcher, but aoon went to the outfield because of his hitting ability. He played the gardens for many seasons, hitting above .300 all the time. Of late years he has been a pinch swatter, playing on the bench most of the time. Toledo wished to retain him in that capacity, but Hickman wanted to retire arid enter the . brokerage business, which he has. already completed plans for doing. He was one of the most popular men in the big leagues while there, and is well liked in the American association.

Humboldt, Iowa, Aug. 11. Following
his announced intention of cutting down on at least a portion of his training stunts, Frank Gotch started today by shortening his usual morning run. Here, however, the cutting down process ended for his work on the mat later in the day was as long and vig
orous as at any time since he. started in. Asbell. Rogers and Westergaard were Frank's mat partners today and all three were treated to plenty of the rough stuff. Gotch worked both offensively and defensively. In order to accustom himself to Hack's bulk the champion had Rogers work behind him a.nd throw his weight upon him as much as possible, thereby in a measure preparing himself for the tactics which the Russian is expected to pursue. The cheerful Influence of Mrs. Gotch Is relieving the monotony of the grind noticeably for Frank and the coming match is eagerly discussed by her with the other members of the training crew
