(Special to The Times.) East Chicago. Aug-. 11. Compara

tively few people in East Chicago are

aware of the fact that a new foundry

has started up In East Chicago. Such, J however, la the case, the establish-1 ment having been operated already for!

several days.

The foundry Is that recently con

structed for the George B. Limbert company and Is on the Riga place side

of the property occupied as a site byj this growing' plant. The first fire In the new cupola was started last Saturday when President Limbert and the entire staff of the general offices, which are located In Chicago, were out. At present there are only twenty-five

men employed In the new foundry, but within the next sixty days from fifty to sixty men will be engaged. The plant has been operated without a hitch, which is rather unusual in new

establishments. The new foundry is only one of a number of improvements which will soon form a part of the Limbert concern. Superintendent Castle has plans in hand for the building of machine and pattern shops next spring. The pattern shop will occupy the Tod avenue side of the property from Riga place to 145th street and the machine shop will be erected in about the center of the site. There will also he a big

storeroom constructed. The new foundry cost $40,000 and was built by August Johnson. It is 10 by 267 feet in dimensions. The George B. Limbert company Is regarded as on of the "comers"' in this region. It was started with one small shop about - three and one-half years ago with ten men and has increased steadily to its present large Unenslons with a payroll of 100 men.

Work will be commenced as soon as the engineers can make these adjustments in their plans, work will be begun preparing the site for the buildings. The buildings will be of brick. The structure "which will contain the main laboratory and offlfces will be three stories in height, and the main building, that in which the machinery is to be located and the Industry carried on, will be a mammoth structure 100 feet by between five and six hundred feet in dimensions. The company, whose name has not yet been made public, is also figuring on putting in its own electric plant, but the details for this have not yet been decided upon.

CONTRACTOR FINISHES

$250,000 JOB i (Special to The Times.) j East Chicago, Aug. 11. F". G. Proud-'

foot who has had contracts for street paving and sidewalks amounting to over a quarter of a million dolfars during the past year in East Chicago, is about finished with his work here and will gather his men, his tools and his

materials together next week and bid farewell to the Twin cities for the pres

ent, to go to Laporte where he has a

big contract for street paving, and vis

likely to have other contracts in the near future for paving. i

Mr. Proudfoot has purchased a big'

portable asphalt mixing plant as th

Laporte contracts call for asphalt

macadam to be used on the two streets for the work on which he has already cinched the contract and whichamounts to over 50.000. He has also '

bought a concrete mixer that spreads material automatically and is a great labor saver. The work he has just completed In East Chicago embraces J 120,000 worth of cement sidewalks and $150,000 worth of paving. Ris men are now at work

on Northcote avenue, the last of the six I streets for which he had the contract'

in East Chicago and all of the side-, walks, which involved an endless amount of filing and grading, are com

pleted. The work is all finished in the

most wprkman like manner, the best of materials having been used, as is always the case in Mr. Praudfoofs work, and satisfaction over the jobs is ex

pressed on every hand. During the past three years this eontractor has

cleaned up considerably more than a

half million dollar's worth of work In the Twin cities. The work Proudfo.ot is about to do in Laporte is on two streets, Main street and th principal business street leading north from that thoroughfare. It will represent the first asphalt ma

cadam ever used In this city. Proud-

foot was one of seven bidders, the only rival contractor bidding against him

from this city being "Williani Ahlborn

of Hammond. There are other con

tracts to be let in Laport in the near future some of which Proudfoot hopes

to land.

CANAL STREET PAVING STARTED (Special to The Times.) Indiana Harbor, Ind., Aug. 11. Work on th-s improvement of Canal street

from Forsyth to Michigan avenues Is well under way. The grading Is about completed and already the laying of

the slag is in progress. "Downey & Portz have the contract for the work, which will probably occupy a couple of months in Its completion. This road represents a considerable link in the road which will make a short cut from Whiting to the Harbor and from Whiting to Gary when the latter is built.

Newcastle. Sales of farms in this vicinity have become frequent In the last six weeks, and values have risen from ISO to flTS an acre. Land at less than $100 an acre has grown scarce in Henry County.
