The matter before the tax board raises an interesting question which will affect all swamp land In northern Indiana, when It Is determined. The men told the board that at one time the land which their club owns was good., duck hunting country and that ducks were plentiful. But when the city of Gary was built it was so close to the club land that It scared all the
ducks away -and that the land is no good now as duck country. The ducks have practically' disappeared. Land Covered With Water. It was pointed out to the board that the land is worthless for anything else, because It is covered with from two to five feet of water. If the land could be drained, they said, it would be valuable, but even this cannot be done un
til after the determination of a suit which is now in the supreme court to test the right of a land owner to drain swamp land. If the land owners win
this appeal the-gun club can then drain
the land and con'ert It into agrlcul
tural land. But If the owners lose the appeal the land will continue to be
worthless.
It was pointed out to the board that
while this club land was appraised at $100 an acre similar land on either sldo of It Is only assessed at $25 to $40 an acre. The board has the case under
advisement. - "

The following Is' the Augnst bill of
tare handed out by Rev. Ira Hicks:
A regular storm period In progress
at the close of July will bring mer
curlal cloudiness and summer storms to eastern parts of the country, during
the first. two or. three days of August.
The quadranture of Jupiter, blending
with other causes, will aggravate all
disturbances about this time.
A reactionary storm" period has Its center on the 5 and 6. On and touching these dates, look for marked In
crease of temperature, falling barometer and rrtoderate to light, misty rain.
We do not beljeve that rains will be
sufficient for crops that are not ma
tured by early August, except in nar
row localities and along the middle
eastern sections.
A regular storm period extends from the 6 to the 14, having full moon on the 9, and moon on the equator on the 13. This period will bring threatening
clouds, fall of barometer and Ylo
lent ' blustering winds. Relief from great warmt will follow disturbances at this time, and many sections will get light to moderate rains, but "not
sufficient for general agricultural
needs. This is the center of a marked seismic period, extending about four days before and after that date. On and about the 13 a crisis of electrical and seismic disturbances. A reactionary storm period is central on the 17 and 18, calling for renewed summer heat, falling barometer and blusternig storms. A show of rain, amounting to showers at scattered sections,, will result at this and other storm periods. A regular 6torm period covers the 20 to 25, central on the 22. A reactionary storm period will bring decided storm conditions on the 27, 28 and 29. The moon being on the celestial equator on the 26 may bring thunder storms and fill the time between this and the preceding period with threatening, stormy weather. Indications are that the month will go with change to fair and much cooler weather.

Piper Still Explaining. Billy Piper, the Gary promoter, says we have been misinformed about that affair the other nifrht between Cleve Hawkins and Ralph Callaway; that the police didn't interfere, etc., etc. Piper's story Is vastly different from that told by Hawkins and his friends after they returned to Chicago. Piper adds further that he offered some of Hawkins colored friends a bet of $600 to $300 on a twenty round contest at 150 pounds at the ringside, a figure that Hawkins couldn't do If he sawed off a leg- and Piper knows It.
