TIMES Bl'REAV, AT STATE CAPITAL. Indianapolis. Ind., July 21. Although there was published yesterday In some of the papers a list of answers given by Governor Marshall to a list of question asked by W. J. Bryan In regard
that the

The fact thaf. Bryan bas asked these questions ot ait of the men whose names have been mentioned as candidates for the presidential nomination, with the single exception of Governor Harmon of Ohio, whom Bryan hates is taken to mean that ho is going to insist on having hand in the naming of the Democratic presidential ticket. And since Bryan is still a strong factor in his party it is taken as a matter of course that any candidate would be glad to hava Bryan with him in the race for the nomination. So it is easy to Bee wny Governor- Marshall answered Bryan's inquiries in a hurry, since Marshall's ideas and those of Bryan on most of the political questions run alon the same line. In addition to saying that he was oposed to the Aldrlch currency plan;

In two campaigns in Indiana Z have insisted tha the people should insist upon answers , to questions which they deemed vital to themselves. I do not, however, conJdr myself a candidate for presiak-. "1 hold it to be such a position that no man is big enough to run after it and no man is small -enough to rure from it. I am leaving it entirely to the will of the Democracy of Indiana, as to whether my name shall be presented to the convention, or not. "I have been impressed with the belief that our recent platforms have presented so many good. things that some voters have been lost to us upon minor issues. I hope, therefore, that the next fight will be made tipon: ' "1). Tariff In revenue only. "Economy in public "expenditures. "The preservation of the rights 'of the state. ' "Opposition to -the-so-called new nationalism.
"This view of mine, hewever, absolves me from the duty of answering as fully as I can the questions which you have propounded. ; "I believe that men should work and spend their money for principles and not for men; that public officials should gladly listen to the views and advice of all citizens; that In the determination of policies and the making of appointments, they should not be subjects to the suspicion, even of having been influenced by either campaign contributions or pledges. to defeat Harmon and the Ifarmon men would rather go to Marsthall than to nominate Wilson. In that way. It is pointed dut. Marshall might land, jus: as he landed the nomination for Governor In this state three years ago by getting In the middle between Samuel M. Ralston and I Ert Slack. The Ralston men, seeing that Slack would probably be nominated. threw their votes to Marshall, who was a low man in the race, in order to prevent the nomination of Slack. It is admitted that this same situation might arise In the national convention. It is Just this thing that the Governor's friends are banking on to some extent.

(Special to The Timks.) East Chicago, Ind., July 21. Lyman Gordon of Wllmette. 111. was arrested last evening . in - East . Chicago, on a charge of speeding. sent a bullet through two vital spots, his heart and his brains, the police were inclined to believe to adopt another view than suicide. Caae I Still Open. Later in the afternoon Dr. Gordon found that the supposed body wound was not around the heart, but that the bullet had pierced the breast. "Suicide while under the influence of liquor is my verdict, but this case is still open for investigation," was Dr. Gordon's announcement. "Brennan might have recovered from this wound," said the deputy - coroner. Coroner Give Theory. "The reason that Mrs.' Connors - did not see blood at first is because the wound wae In tho man's breast. While she was out getting assistance he probably shot himself. It is not there that there was an absence of powder stains. Powder marks are visible, but they are slight. Brennan had been drinking heavily of .late and had been reprimanded and
suspended for his conduct. He was 32 years old. It is said in Tolleston that Mrs. Connors is suing her husband, John Connors, for divorce and intended to become Brennan's wife in due time. Yesterday when Brennan came home he was intoxicated and wanted to kiss
Mrs. Connors, but she made him go to his room. The woman seemed to be
much perturbed because ot the fact that Brennan had died without the presence of a Catholic priest. Brennan's remains were taken to Finerty's morgue. As yet no funeral arrangements have been made.
