Hammond, Kast Chit-ago and the county will join hands to repair the Kennedy avenue bridge over the Grand Calumet river at Grassetll. the cities each to pay one-fourth of the cost and the county one-half. At an adjourned meeting of the Hammond city council last night, that body turned the bridge over to the county commissioners temporarily until all the

repairs are made. The contract for the work will be let by the county commissioners, and upon completion the bills will be submitted to the cities. Adam It. Ebert, president of the board of public works, explained to the Hammond city council last night that negotiations had been pending for several months!. Ordinarily, he said, the county does

The

work being done by the county will also

gating committee, has followed with

interest the proceedings of the interna

tional steel conference at Brussels. He expressed the belief today that the encouragement at Brussels of a "golden rule" principle of doing business was due to a desire of the United States Steel Corporation to neutralize any action congress might take as a result of the investigation of that concern, Stanley said: s "If as a resuft of the investigation the steel trust should be dissolved the trust undoubtedly would be forced to compete In an open market with the world's output and, without tariff protection, would be forced to cut prices. "If, however, an international agreemen limiting' the world's output and possibly prescribing limits of territory for the sale of the output of each

country, can be arranged, the ' steel

trust need fear no foreign competition.

Upon that basis the action of E. H.

Gary in endeavoring to secure a world

wide understanding is a natural one."

Representative Stanley declares he believes the Inquiry will result in reredaeing the city on steel products.
