and the number on those found thus far is E 212946. The signature on the bill are "V. T. Vernon,' register of th treasury, and Charles II. Treat, treasurer of the United States. The flat appearance of the portrait of Benton on the bill is one of the characteristics of the work. While the Benton picture Is not so well done, the bill is easily mistaken for the genuine by those not used to handling currency.
Watch Your $100 Bills. Any one who is plutocratic enough to take in a $100 bill these days should examine it with a microscope. Tho local banks have been warned that a newcounterfeit of the gold certificate of that denomination has Just appeared. Incidentally the perpetrator of this fraud is making a profit of $90 on his Investment, as the paper is genuine. The "queer one" is printed on paper that was first a $10 bill but which has been bleached by the counterfeiter before putting the $100 Impression on it. The work is said to .be very good. The check letter on the bill is "B"
Meeting Bar Association. William J. Whinery, his wife and little girl, B. W. Van Home and wife, and E. G. Sproat are among the Lake county lawyers who went to the meeting of the Lake County Bar association at Winona Lake yesterday.
Trouble Carried Higher. The trouble between the Evansvllle Brewing company and Edward Sommers has at last b,een carried to the Lake superior court. Suit was started
by Attorney J. A. Uavit against Edward Sommers and Frederick Sommen by which the brewing company seeks to recover possession of the fixtures of the saloon and $1,500 damages. Beatrice Man Arrested. John Sheehan of Beatrice (Ind.) was arrested on Fayette street by Officer Borchert this morning for drunkenness. He was brought to the police station and locked up, where he is trying to
find some kindly friend in Hammond to bail him out. John had been drinking something that gave him one of those loving jags as he threw his arms around a young lady's waist and caused quite a commotion. One of the witnesses called Officer Borchert, who placed him under arrest. We are afraid John will have
to answer before Judge Barnett tomorrow morning.
Jacob Friedman for not keeping his bakery goods and bread covered up in the wagon. Markley was notified several time before, but seemingly paid no heed to Friedman's warning.
Horse Stolen.
Champion Swimmer Here. Peter Mc Nally of Boston, the champion swimmer of the United States, and William Waldron of Philadelpria were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Hellley of South Hohman st. yesterday. Architect Davis of Omaha and formerly of this city was also a visitor at the Reiley home.

The Island police notified the Hammond police to watch for a horse and wagon stolen from there some time last night. The outfit answers the following description: Light gray horse, 7 years old; weight, 1,350 pounds; new single harness, low wheeled open wagon, red seat, name of Draftro on wagon, value $250.

Returns to Rensselaer. Howard Clark, who has been at Hammond for the past two weeks, returned home this afternoon. He has been practicing with the Hammond ball team, a member of the Northern Indiana League and was to have been given a tryout as pitcher last Saturday, but the game for that day was cancelled. It is now the intention to give him a tryout next Saturday. If he makes good the Job will be a good paying one. Rensselaer Republican.

Chicago Peddler Fined. Jacob Joseph, a peddler from Chicago, was arrested by Officers Lamme and Elnsele at Condit street for peddling without a license yesterday afternoon. The case was tried before Judge Barnett this morning in the city court, and Joseph was fined $1 and costs, amounting to $8, which he paid. The police department have had considerable trouble with peddlers in Hammond regarding them not taknig out licenses. In the future they are to be watched and if they are caught they will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Sues for Divorce. Vary Vandevender has started a suit against Charles Vandervender In which she seeks a divorce on the grounds of desertion. They were married June 15, 1908, and were separated Oct. 30 of the same year. Attorneys McMahon & Conroy started the suit.

Richard Markley, the Chicago man, who was arrested Saturday for violating the pure food law, appeared for trial this morning before Judge Barnett and the case was continued, until Friday, July 14, at 9 o'clock. Markley came here with a bery wagon, and; was arrested by City Sealpr
Two in Ames' Court. Judge Ames' court was a busy scene this morning disposing of two cases. The first case of the state of Indiana against R. Young, the defendant was found guilty and fined $1 and costs. Julia Phillips was the complaining witness. -i The second case of the state of Indiana against John Arens was also found guilty and fined $5 and costs. John Morton, the complaining witness, charged Arens with assault and battery.
Death of W. W. Williams. W. W. Williams died at his home, 122 Clinton street, this morning after a short illness. The remains will be shipped to Marion, Ohio, his former home, on the 10:19 Erie tonight, where funeral services and burial will be held. Williams is well known In Ham-
