months and it is expected that it will be finished entirely by August 1 and

" ' expected to run me ractory at capacity from the start, about 100 men being sufficient to do the work that is planned for the beginning. This number will, however, gradually be increased until their will be 400 men employed in this one branch of the big plant. Most of these men will be skilled workmen who will receive good wages and many of them will doubtless become permanent citizens of Indiana Harbor and vicinity. Business at the mill Is flourishing, there being plenty of orders to keep the establishment working in all its departments. It is anticipated that tho railroads will come in with larste or

ders in the near future, as many of them are running from hand to mouth and will soon be forced to provide

themselves with new equipment.

East Chicago, July 7. Tho Cudahy

Packing company will in the near future begin the manufacture of refrige

rator cars In this city. Yesterday it

was definitely decided to move the big Omaha car manufacturing and repair

ing plant to this locality and engi

neers will go into the property Just

djoinlng th Old Dutch Cleanser plant

at Calumet today to begin the prelimi

nary work.

The buildings will be sufficiently

large to cover two miles of track for the accommodation of cars under process of erection and others left at the paint for repairs. Work on the grading will be begun as soon as the engineer get through, with their preliminary work. It Is estimated that as soon m. the plant is set in operation 300 expert car builders and their helpers will be set to work. This is jthe number of men at present employed in the Omaha plant, and the new factory will be started on at least no less an extensive scale. The plant has been In contemplation for a considerable period, but it was a question with the company whether to

build It at Calumet or elsewhere in this I

vicinity. However, after looking the ground over it was decided that because of the facilities afforded by the

Indiana Harbor Belt and for other rea-

sons too numerous to mention, that

Calumet was the logical point.

All of the cars designed for through

service and all of the repairing on through cars will be done at the new

plant. Cars from the east bound for the west and cars from northern points south bound and vice versa will be re

paired in transit. This is made possible by the Indiana Harbor Belt which circles Chicago, the terminus of all the big trunk lines, tapping all of

these roads. The Belt, when the cars consigned from one through road t anotheri instead of delivering them to the roaS to which they are consigned, will deliver them first to the plant at Calumet for repairs, where such repairs

are necessary, and no time will be losi by thi.4 arrangement.

The location of the car shops in Calu

met is another triumph for this locali

ty. Its proximity to labor of all kinds as well as to the Indiana Harbor Belt has much to do with the decision to

locate here. C. W. Hotchklss is the man who is responsible for the loca

tion of the shops at this point.

The average age at which factory em

ployes begin work in Hungary and Spain is ten years.

About ninety-nine per cent, of the

members of the International Paving Cutters' Union are employed on the

piecework system, and most of the gains they atrlve for are in the naturo of Improved working conditions, which lead to better wages. President T. W. Howe of the American Flint Glass. Workers' Union has sent out ft circular letter to the Glass Bottle Blowers' Association, a rtvai organization, making overtures for a settlement of the long fight between the two organizations.

(Special to Tub Times.) Indiana Harbor, July 7. The E., J. &

E. Railroad company is to establish ' switching yards on the lake front I where It owns the riparian rights be

tween Buffington and the Danks property. To this end material Is to be assembled on the site of the new switching yards and probably within a month work of hauling the stuff In and filling In the lake to make room for the yards will be begun. It is said also that repair shops will be a feature of the new undertaking. The present yards at South Chicago are crowded, as are also the Kirk yards, the latter having afl they can do to accommodate the business at Gary. The extension of the cement plant at Buffington will make the switching into these grounds much greater, and a yards In the vicinity of the big plant will greatly facilitate matters here.

The switching yards and repair shops

will mean work for a considerable

number of men in this vicinity.

SECOND FLOOR PLAN,

This exterior is very much out of the ordinary, Its attractiveness due to the novel treatment of roofs. The piazza walls are of brick, the house of frame. A pretty color combination would be a brown body, moss green roof, white sash and red brick for the piazza. The interior arrangement combines all the conveniences found in the modern home. Birch floors are used throughout, oak finish in the living room, dining room and hall, and birch in the kitchen and second story. SUe of house 33 by 27 feet over the main part. Cost to build, exclusive of heating and plumbing, $4,150.

By special arrangement with me the editor of this paper will furnish one complete set of plans and specifications of design No. 849 for $25. GLENN L. SAXTON.
