Northern Indiana Gas &

Electric Co. to Put up Million Cubic Feet Gas Holder in East Chicago on Site of New Power Plant.

Manager W". D. Ray, of the Northern Indiana Gas & Electric company, authorizes the statement that a new holder of 1.000,000 cubic feet capacity will be erected on the site of the new $750,000 power plant in East Chicago. The new holder has been purchased from the Bartlett-Hayward company of Baltimore, Md., and will cost $100,000. It was the original Intention of the company to build this enormous holder in Hammond next to the 350,000 cubic foot holder which is in use here, but it was found impossible to secure the necessary ground at a figure that warranted the company in making the purchase. The gas will be manufactured in Hammond and shot over to East Chicago under high pressure, where It will be contained in the new holder. This is also a recognition of the remarkable growth of the city of East Chicago. The East Chicago holder Is expected to supply E:ist Chicago, Indiana Harbor and Whiting. The small holder in Hammond w:ll supply this city. This makes a total of $830,000 which the Northern. Indiana Gas & Electric company proposes to spend in the locality in which it has franchises. The new holder will be constructed under the supervision of Manager Allen Graham, of the gas department of the company, and by Engineer Baldwin. The construction of the new holder was authorized two months ago, but the announcement was withheld until the site was determined upon. One of the reasons for building the new holder in East Chicago was that it would be necessary to spend $13,000 for piling in Hammond, on account of the poor foundations that were afforded on the company's property in this city.

charge of similar operations in this vicinity and she and her husband will e in Indiana Harbor on Saturday, to superintend the work. Not long ago they built a church in Tolleston, and some time thereafter they had charge of work of a similar nature in Hammond. The Tolleston church was built from foundation to roof In five hours. Mrs. Trimble declares that with good weather Indiana Harbor will have a Christian church parsonage within an equal number of hours. A goodly force of carpenters have been secured for the work and they w-ill make their saws and hammers fly in an effort to break all past records, if possible. Mrs. Trimble will herself do something in the construction, but for the most part she confined her help to superintending and encouraging workmen. She will be supported by women of the congregation who will be on hand to render what aid they may, and the women will later nerve a supper to the workmen employed upon the building.

BOOM FOR EAST CHICAGO East Chicago, June 30. East Chicago will be considerably set up over the fact that the Auto Journal advises those taking the 'down-state" trip to go through East Chicago instead of Hammond as formerly. This will cut off a detour of several miles and provide a better road than the old one through Hammond. The new route has been made possible by the paving of Forsyth avenue. East Chicago will lose some traffic by the paving of the Canal road, which will provide a direct route from Indiana Harbor to Whiting, but this will be more than compensated for by the additional automobile traffic that will be brought to it since it is "on the map" as a point along the "downstate" road.
