TAPPING CONTINUES
$38,093.24, a Mere Bagatelle, However, Extracted From Gary's Municipal Strong Box Last Evening at Special Council Meeting.
Last night's special session of the Gary common council resulted in tappingthe city treasury to the extent of J3S.093.2-I. Flags for Fourth of July, adding- machine, one automobile for police and aldermanic 'joy rides," a couple of thousand more for the city riall Janitor's expense account, and other Incidentals made a nice hole In
mayor or the mayor pro tern was the most worried. Affidavits procured by the , latter in January and signed by "Diamond Bill" Fraxier and "Dog Face" Charley would Indicate that the former had given orders to his henchmen to kill the mayor pro tern. At least this was the substance of the evidence offered in the court and published in the press. So, when Bowser and Knotts came face to face there was a queer look in the face of each. Following the council session the mayor and mayor pro tern retired to the former's private office, where some explanations were in order, but everything ended up nicely.

There were covers for thirty-six andthe dinner was served in three courses.
Music contributed to the enjoyment
of the occasion, Mrs. Lawrence Jamea I

recited. Mrs .E. Higgins and Mrs. W. C. Jones assisted Mrs Lewis in serving. The table was very prettily decorated in red, white and blue, as was the house throughout, and the place cards were hand painted. There were a number of very handsome costumes worn at the affair. The hostess was " gowned in white embroidery and Mrs. A. A. Ross wore whLte voile trimmed in Cluny lace and pale blue satin. Mrs. James' gown was of white voile with pink flowers and trimmed in black velvet ribbon, and Mrs. McCoy was wearing white embroidery. Mrs. Hig
gins wore black and white voile and Mrs. W. C. Jones white Swiss, while Mrs. A. W. Wood had on a becoming
gown of blue foulard and Mrs. Lawrence brown pea de sole. The dinner was one of the most enjoyable affairs of the season.

x The HAMMOND Times has gone out of its way to create the impression that Emerson Bowser made a deal with
Major T. E. Knotts to help him out . of his troubles in Valparaiso, and al
leges that Mr. Bowser attempted to evade the witness stand. The Tribune believes that The Times is not so much to blame in this matter as the attorneys for the state, Messrs. Whinery and Welshheimer. The facts are that Mr. Bowser went to Valparaiso at the beginning of the trial, and was taken
i very ill. I'pon the advice of physicians who were called to attend the sick man
he was taken to Chesterton and give the proper treatment. He called the sheriff of Porter county to his bedside Just' as soon as the doctor told him he was in for a sick spell, and acquainted
I him with the situation, and told him
where he could be found when wanted. In addition to this precaution, he had a lawyer in court to represent him, and
i to acquaint the state with the situa-
gajj tlon. The was no time when he
not have been prod need in court
when needed upon thirty minutes' no-
I tice, and the attorneys for the state
knew this. They preferred to disbelieve Mr. Bowser's attorney and the sheriff of Porter county, and caused a bench warrant to be issued for him, evidently for the purpose of creating in the minds of the public the impression that something crooked was going on. The course of Whinery and Welshelm er throughout the trials of the Gary cases in Valparaiso has been childish, and results have proved tjhem incompetents. For Instance, the charge that Mr. Bowser tried to tamper with witnesses and public sentiment on behalf of Mr. Knotts, is one without foundation and malicious. If the state really had a case against any of the men tried it lost all chnace of winning through the folly of its attorneys. , Chesterton Tribune. ' ;

grand Jury returned a batch of indictments numbering six, but there wa nbill against tho Steel Corporation or any of its subsidiaries. Suit Uumor Heard. These things were a matter of common gossip and news bureau discussion. There was something of far greater significance guardedly talked about in well informed quarters in such a manner as to show that it was at least the subject of serious regard the possibility, or rather the probability, of an early suit by the government under the Sherman anti-trust law,, charging the Steel Corporation with violations of that law and seeking the dissolution o the corporation and this was the basis of the selling of Steel common today. Needless to say this rumor was much more seriously regarded than a similar one of yesterday affecting the American Smelting and Refining Company. It was pointed out that the
