(Special to The Times.) . East Chicago, Ind., June 16. Citizens
of East Chicago and Indiana Harbor were curious to know what that white substances which looked like a coarse
form of salt and which a force of
workmen was spreading- In the streets, was being distributed for. They were also curious to know what made their shoes tight the other morning when
they went to put them on.
The stuff that was being: spread it
appears was what is known as Salvay.
being- technically calcium chloride, a form of salt, and its purpose is to do away with the necessity of ' street
sprinklers. It also had to do with the
unwonted tightness of the shoes of
persons who had crossed the streets
where it 13 being spread a number of
times, for the stuff Is astringent when
applied although this quality, disap
pears after the material has lain for
twelve hours.
The theory is that the Salvay ab
sorbs the moisture from the air thus
keeping the streets moist continually
508 Hammond Bldg.
It Is only part ieable on macadamir.ed roadways as ft eats into cement and such like compounds.
The salvay is an experimnt In Fast
Chicago and Indiana Harbor although
it has been in use in Europe and in some places in America for the past three years or more. Five tons of the stuff have been purchased by the city and it is to be tried out in Chicago avenue from Forsythe avenue to Olcott
street and Michigan avenue from Grapevine to Guthrie. The first season two applications are necessary hut after that it. is claimed that one will suffice to keep moist for an -entire season, the roadways where it is employed. As th.; material itself is cheap, it
is expected that it will be adopted!

here, provided the experiment proves
successful. I is the intention to spread the stuff on the roadway between Ens: Chicago and Indiana Harbor. It is the intention to give the stuff a good trial of a few weeks before adopting it, it being desired to await a heavy rain to ascertain what the effect of this will be.
GOVERNMENT MEN
MAKE NEW SURVEYS
(Special to The Times.) Indiana Harbor, Ind., June 1 .- Gov
ernment men were out a few days ago
from Chicago to make the surveys necessary to the location of two lighthouses which are soon to be erected In
the local harbor.
The party spent some time in the
harbor, in Matt Sternberg s launch.
and the preliminary steps toward the
erection of one of the lighthouses.
were taken.
The steel towers are to be built at
the entrance of the harbor, one it them to be erected near th end of the northwesterly pier, while the exact location of the other has not been decided upon. It will probably be set on
the Inland property near the canal
entrance. The lighthouses will be set
in concrete foundations.
They will be equipped with brilliant
acetylene lights both front and back, the lights to work automatically, com
ing on voluntarily at the approach of
darkness, and being extinguished similarly with the first beams of day. The lights will flash out at ai time
during the day, incase storm clouds obscure th daylight, sufficiently to
cause darkness.
Vice President C. A. Westberg re
ceived a letter a few days ago front T). W. Bkamer, commander of ' the
tTnlted States Navy in charge of the
12th lighthouse district, apprising that
work would be begun on the two lighthouses In th very near future.
A great mistake made by many is the purchase of inferior enameled iron goods for plumbing equipment with the idea of economizing. All manufacturers of these goods have a certain portion of their product which is not good enough to Vie marketed under their name and these are put on the market through vari
ous "wildcat" outlets. They almost invariably have .some inherent defect which sooner or later develops to the
I discomfort of the purchaser. ;
There may be only a small pin hole
' in the enamel which might be thought to do no harm, but the rust will work ! through and discolor and roughen the
'.enamel. Again the enamel might not
be perfectly amalgamated with the iron, leaving a "blister" which eventually will. crack off. leaving the surface of the iron exposed. A third fault is warping, which may leave a pool in the bottom of a tub which will not drain to the waste, necessitating removing the dirty water from the tub with a rag or sponge. A lixture like this, instead of being economy will prove to be an extravagance and whatever the excuse for purchasing such "junk" when enameled goods were high in price, there is none when a guaranteed bathtub may be purchased for from fourteen to thirty

ROUTES THROUGH
Ag stated In The Time several weeks
ago, the Chicago, Lake Shore & South
Bend Railway Co. will be running Its
interurban cars all of the way to Ran
dolph street by the 20th of this month.
This will be a great convenience to
the people of Hammond, East Chicago
and Indiana Harbor for the reason that
it will be the only railroad in this section of the country that will take Its
passengers that far down town.
Most of the large department stores
of the better class are located on the north side of the elevated loop in Chicago and most of the terminals of the
eastern roads are on the south side, i
This makes it necessary to ride across
the city on the street cars.
But with the installation of the down
town service this will all be changed
