Among"fhe" first "big picnics to be held in Hammond this summer Is that of , Saengerbund-Fidelia, which has made arrangements to hold a big open

air celebration at Kindel's Grove on Sunday, June 25th. In a few days several thousand souvenir buttons will arrive which can be worn as badges announcing the event which, the singers expect to make one of the biggest In the history of the organization. The program, while not yet outlined in detail, will have the usual picnic features, such as dancing, music, games and refreshments, and a number of extras are promised which will add zest and vim to the occasion. MRS. MEADE ARRESTED

William Meade, who has been staying at the Stonebreaker hotel, on Conkey avenue, was arrested at Indiana and Oakley by Officers Bunde and Einsele last night, and Is held at the police station today for forgery. , Meade is accuse dof forging three or four checks In Hammond and are now awaiting for the return of . a check fro ma Chicago bank, where he claimed he had money. . . This morning he said he was guilty, but that a fellow gave him the check.

but he did not know where he could

find the fellow at the present time Recently he tried to sell a check

amounting to $7, for a dollar. He was suspected at that time, but nothing

was said about it.

His trial will come up before Judge

Three suspicious looking negroes were arrested last night at Ridge road

One of the pretty parties of the week was one at which the members of the Oak Leaf Embroidery Club wer en

tertained yesterday afternoon at th

home of Mrs. Phillip Stelnmetz in Ann

street. It was the afternoon for the regular bi-monthly meeting and all the members were present. It was decided

to have the last until fall when the members will enjoy another series of entertainments. The' afternoon was spent pleasantly with needle work until four-thirty o'clock when the guests were invited into the dining room and served with a dainly lunch

Miss Anna Rohrman was named as the next hostess and she will entertain in two weeks at her home in East State street.

AN AFTERXOQX PARTY. One of the enjoyable social affairs of yesterday afternoon was a whist, party at which Mrs. Henry Burge was hostess at her home in Carroll street. Her guests for the afternoon were the members of the Fern Leaf Linen Club who met for their regular bi-monthly meeting. vMrs. Burge received her guests in the parlors where they spent the time In conversation until the card games were announced. The guests played several games of whist at smaU tables and after seven games the honors were awarded. Mrs. Burge received the first honors. Mrs. Thomas Hart, the second and Mrs. Dufrain the third.
