FINE BLOCK

(Special to The Times.) East Chicago, June 6. Chicago avenue Is to have another fine business block. This la to be put up by Dave Cohen, proprietor' of the Bee Hive department etore, and in order to accommodate it a number of smaller structures most be moved or torn down. The new structure will occupy a frontage of "5 feet in Chicago avenue, running back to a depth of 100 feet. It will be erected on the property between the First National bank and the Albert Given building, the ground now being occupied by buildings devoted to the Pure Food Bakery, the Frankton Cigar store, the Maine restaurant and

the East Chicago Tea and Coffee store. It is Mr. Cohen's intention to move his department store into a portion of the new structure, he having fifty feet frontage, while the remaining twentyfive feet frontage will be partitioned off and let as a store. A tenant has not yet been secured, but no difficulty is anticipated in getting suitable tenants. The building will be two stories In height, the upper floor to be divided off into five or six flats. One of these will be occupied by the owner of the building as a residence and the others will be rented. The building will be of pressed brick and stone and will be well finished and provided with modern improvements. Mac Turner of Hammond i3 the architect who is preparing the plans for the new building. These are not yet finished, but as soon as they are, bids will be advertised for and the contract let. It Is intended to finish the building this year.

CONTRACTS ARE LET

(Special to The Times.) Indiana Harbor, June 6. Contracts approximating $130,000 for the improvement of Park adidtion were let yesterday by the board of public works. The improvements Include paving, sidewalks, curbing, gutters, sewer tubs and water service pipes on the following streets; Drummond from 141st to 143d streetsr Carey from 139th to 143d; Ivy from 139th to J43d; Parish from 139th to 142nd; Hemlock from 139th to 142d; Grapevine from 139th to 142d; Fir from 139th to 142d; 140th from Fir to Carey, and 142d from Parish to Carey The contracts were awarded to the Central Westrumite company, and the paving is to be done with liquid asphalt. i - The Park addition includes the beautiful Washington park addition and embraces all the territory which until a couple of years ago was known under the significant name "The Jungles." However, since the Washington Park

Land company took hold of a large part of it and began to Improve the same, the term has become obsolete, so far as this locality is concerned, and it promises to be the best residence district in the Harbor. There was no remonstrance over the matter of putting In the improvements, nor of the material to be used in the same, the East Chicago company and the Washington Park company owning practically all of the property.

Muncie The annual assessment of personal property in Center township, Delaware county, including the incorporated towns of Muncie, Riverside and Normal City, shows an increase over the last assessment of $227,375. The present assessment is $4,630,750, as against $4,303,375. , The gain in the city of Muncie Is $160,865.

(Special to The Times.) East Chicago, Ind., June 8. East Chicago is soon to have an attractive $15,000 railway station on the site now occupied by the old frame depot on the Pennsylvania grounds. The plans have all been drawn and approved by the company and work on the structure will be begun shortly. This was reported at the meeting of the Commercial club of Indiana Harbor and East Chicago last night, E. W. Wickey being the bearer of the glad tidings. Mr. Wickey explained that he was speaking of the matter to a.n official of the Pennsylvania a few days ago and that his information was obtaine from him. t The Commercial club has ben working on this project for a year1 in conjunction with the city administration, and the news that their efforts were about to . be crowned with achievement, was well received. It is understood that the depot Is not to be so very large, but It will be of attractive architecture and will do much toward creating a good appearance to travelers who have heretofore looked out up on a frame shack unworthy the name of depot for a city the size of East Chicago.
