WHITING. The Ladies' Aid society of the M. E. church, numbering, thirty-two, accompanied by Uev. M. C. Wright, spent a day on the farm on Tuesday. In response to an invitation from Mrs. Chas. Lloyd of Chesterton the ladies hied themselves away to that place early In the morning. "At the station Mr. Lloyd met them with a large hayrack and the trip of two miles out Into the country to the Lloyd home was very enjoyable. The day was spent in various ways, chief among which was picking: strawberries. The ladies took their lunches.

Spokane. Yellow Stone Park and will return by the northern route. The Savings and Loan association held a business meeting in Davidson's leal estate"oTtice. The Tussoch moth, which is a well known enemy of shade and fruit trees, is becoming the pest of the day in Whiting. The maple trees seem to be the only tree which are at present effected, and in several cases these are simply covered. The Tussoch moth, whose caterpillars are tufted with hairs, are often brightly colored, although ths moths themselves are inconspicuous gray. The caterpillars feed upon laves, and when numerous do vast damage to forest and shade trees. Our native species, tile white marked Tussock, called the white moth, are what are on the Whiting trees. Several people are using the method of washing ofT the branches and limbs with a solution

of soap and water, as a preventive, but spraying with arsenates is also recommended. Charles Manbeck, the newly elected member of the Whiting board of education, will assume his office on Aug. 1st, at which time the term of Walter Schrage expires. Mrs. Lottie Eaton of Chicago was In Whiting yesterday visiting. Herbert Treen, who has been residing in Whiting, but who is employed in the Hammond office of the Chicago Telephone company, at Hammond, surprised his friends on last Saturday by going to Crown Point and coming back a benedict. The bride is an old schoolmate from Idaho. Mr. and Mrs. Treen will will reside in Hammond. A party of his Whiting friends having gone over last evening to give the young couple a house warming. Pante. Haralovitch of New Tork avenue was arrested on the charge of having kept his saloon open on Sunday. Haralovitch was placed under $1,000 bonds and will appear for trial before Judge Fetterhoff this evening. Dancing every Saturday night at the East Chicago Kink. Music by DeBraie's band. ' 6-4t
