deal that Whiting got from the assessor looks queer. Then the visit of the state board of tax commissioners revealed a lot of Inequitable valuations, of acreage over the county. The people of the entire

county are aroused and it Is certain

that before this matter Is disposed of that there will be a lot or trouble.

Assessor Black says that th banks

are dodging taxes. He says that their

deposits are reputed to aggregate seven

million dollars and vet he will be sur-

prised if $500,060 of deposits is schedul

ed for taxaUon.

One of the possibilities of the situa

tion is that the state board of tax com

missioners will make a general investi

gation of valuations in Lake county.

The state board visited Whiting yes

terday and Gary today and is learning something about acreage valuations. It

will visit Gary and explain how It Is lmpossibla that hundreds of acres of

sand dunes and ridges could be worth

81,000 an acre.

SCHOOL BOARD TAKES UP BOND QUESTION

At a meeting of the Gary school board last night bonds amounting to approximately $60,000 were offered by

English Bros., contractors, of Cham

paign. 111., for the south side school

building for which contract has been

let to English Bros, at a regular meeting of the school board a week ago.

The bonds were rejected, not because of the standing of the bond company but because the board thought that

Gary bonding companies should be con-

idered.

The school board ordered the play

grounds thrown open at Emerson, Jef

ferson, Twelfth, Fourteenth and Twen

ty-fourth avenue schools.

Nothing else but routine business

was transacted.

Improved Coloring Materials. The, distinguished German chemist, Ostwald, has taken out a German patent for the improvement of drawing inks and water colors. He has found out that by the addition of small quantities (from 1 to 100 to 1 to, 1,000) of volatile organic compounds of the alipbatio series, which are soluble In

water, at least to a small extent, and

contain not less than four atoms of carbon, Inks and other water colors are rendered capable of readily marking such surfaces as parchment, ivory, waxed paper, etc. In the case of neutral liquids an alcohol, ester or other neutral substance is used, while to acid inks, free fatty acids, such as valeric or caproic acid, may be added

Author's Bravery In Epidemic. John Richard Green, author of the

well-known history of England, was a parish priest in London In 186S. He took a prominent part in the work of relief when an epidemic killed many people. Mrs. J. R. Green has left on record a typical instance. "On one occasion he found a man dangerously ill in an upper room. Some big draymen In the street refused to help. Green, therefore, tried to carry the man downstairs. His slight frame ,was unequal to the effort and the two fell from the top to the bottom of the stairs together. The man, who was in a state of collapse, was not injured."

(Special to The Times.) East Chicago, June 7. Creat prep

arations are being made this year at the Harrison and McKinley schools, for

the second anual picnic which is to take place at the picnic grounds owned by the United States Metals Refining com

pany at One Hundred and Fifty-first

street and the canal.

For the use of these grounds the

school is Indebted to Superintendent Thumb of the big plant and this year

conveyances are to be provided for

such as desire to ride. . The Lewis liv

ery will provide the buses which are to serve this purpose of small fare b-

lng charged.

Those who attend the picnic are re

quested to gather at the McKinley

school at 10 o'clock where th buses will

line up and patrons are assured that

this year the arrangemnts will be such that the big boys who arrive on the

grounds early will not consume all the

free lemonade before the crowd arrives.

There will be the usual picnic pas

times, including races for children and

gronups and the merchants have con

tributed prizes which will add to the

interest in these events.

Launches will be provided for such

as desire to enjoy the water, this be

ing done in order that the children may not be inclined to get out in boats

alone on the canal. There will no a baseball game between the grade pupils and this will elicit a great deal of Interest. Water has been piped from the Metals plant to the grounds and an effort will be made to have the neces

sary coils for ice water.

On the whole the event Is expected to

be much more of a success than that of last year, although that was a very

enjoyable affair. FUNERALOyjTi.
