SOME CITY, BELIEVE ME"
NEW FOUNDRY BLDG. EAST CHICAGO TO HAVE
STILL ANOTHER FINE CHURCH
EXTRAVAGANCE IN
BUILDING BY TRYING TO ECONOMIZE Architect George W. Maher says: "There is more extravagance in building houses than in any legitimate spending of money that I can think of. The couple who are planning a home and who are limited as to their bank account generally agree to forego the services of a professional designer and architect, thereby saving a fee of possibly $100. To further economise they shun the largo contractor, buying their own materials and hiring their own labor. Thus they make for themselves problems and vexations galore and In the long run Incur more expense than they can afford. ''Provided, however, they avoid the above errors by enlisting the services of competent architects and contractors and still feel they must economize in the construction, let them beware of the 'economy' of jcheap plumbing. Aftef the doctor's bills have been paid, especially If they have children, and after yearly repair bills are met they will find this amount so far overbalances the saving on the first cost as to make this one item the most expensive economy they could have attempted."
(Special to Ths Timkb.) East Chicago, Ind., June 1. East Chicago is to have another splendid church building to be built between now and Oct. 1. The structure is to cost $35,000. This time it is the Polish Catholics who are coming to the front they having been working quietly among their own people, until what is def.tir.ed to m probably the most expensive church bnilding yet built or contemplated, in either of the twin cities is now assured. The church will be built on the site now occupied by gt. Stanislaw's church, a humble frame structure, the latter to be moved back from Magoun avenu near One Hundred and Fiftieth street, to a frontage on Forsyth avenue, and will be converted Into a hall. Rollers are already under the old church building and work on moving the same will be begun this afternoon, under the supervision of Ignatius
Mlndyjtowskl who has the contract for the same. Bids on the new building will be opened either this afternoon or tomorrow, there being half a dozen
contractors figuring on the Job. The building will be a combination school and church and besides an auditorium seating 850 there will be erglt rooms accommodating 600 pupils. Six of the rooms will be above the church auditorium while two will be back of it. The building will be 72 by ISO feet In dimensions and will be built of brick with stone trimmings. It will be finished In hardwood throughout and will be steam heated and electric lighted, in
short It Is to be strictly modern la every particular. The auditorium will have a celling 21
feet high and it is planned to have I handsome decorations and furnlsi.ihss. j The church owns a block of property where the cars turn at Forsyth and One Hundred and Fiftieth, which has always been beautifully kept, blooms with roses in their season, and with Other flowers in theirs, and It has always added greatly to the attractiveness Of the neighborhood. The handSome and expensive building now to be erected, will do its share toward Improving the neighborhood In Which It is located, and will also help to convey a good Impression to strangers coming from the direction of Hammond. Father Peter Budnlck is the pastor of the church, having held this post for two years. He succeeded Father Joseph Halk and under his administrations of its affairs the church has thriven apace. Father Budnick is very popular as well as capable and is greatly liked not only among his own
people, but holds a high place In the esteem of the public generally. This makes the third new church to be promised In the hear future for East Chicago alone. The Methodists are to put tip an edifice to cost not less than $!0,000, as are the Congregationaiists, and it Is thought that with three fine new church buildings, all building at the same timl, as it is expected these will be. East Chicago should gain considerable of a reputation as a city of beautiful churches.
