A big fight Is now scheduled for the appointment of the new member of the school board which will be made it Is said, at the next meeting of the city council next Monday night. A. P. Melton the retiring member is a candidate of reappointment and many of his friends are now working in his behalf. Among the other candidates for the ofllee is E A. Ridgley, proprietor of the drug srore at the corner of Sixth avenue and Broadway, whose candidacy has been indorsed by the Retail Mer

chants' Association and who are circulating a petition today which has already been signed by over 100 prominent business men. C. A. Flynn superintendent of the rail mills at the Gary plant is said to have at least four votes in the council pledged In his behalf and C. Oliver

Holmes, a former member of the school board, and John Kirk, general superintendent of the E., J. & E. railroad at Gary, are other candidates. It Is also said on good authority that Boliee Szymanskl, son of Alderman

Szymanskl, is the dark horse in the

race and will receive the support of Al

dermen Baukus, John Slamiasko and

D. Szymanskl, who contend tnat the

foreign population should have a representative on the school boa'd. The fight is growing more Interesting every day and many wires are being pull

ed by the different factions trying to

land their man in the school board chair.

GARY TO BUILD

ARENA FOR BOXERS

Plans were completed by Architects Walter Hudson and J. C. Kennedy today for the construction of a big arena at the corner of Thirteenth avenue and Main street, Tolleston in which boxing: contests and other athletic exhibitions will be held in Gary in the future. The new arena of which Sam Sax is promoter and owner wll have a seating apaclty of $6,000 persons and will cost $10,000 When completed. Work will be started immediately so that it will be completely by July 4th at which time Mr. Sax will pull off on pf the biggest exhibitions In thes history of the

northern part of th state. The arena will be inclosed with a roof over the seats but the ring will have no roof. Packey McFarland has signed a cone tract to fight on July 4th at Gary if Mr. Sax can arrange a match with some favorable opponent. It not Johnny Coulon the bantamweight champion will be the attraction.

Dickson, the mechanician for Arthur Grenier, whose car was wreck

Arthur Grenier, the millionaire, is badly bruised, in addition to having a broken leg, as the result of his accident. The other injured persons at the Methodist hospital are: David Lewis, mechanician of Loiler No. 33, fractured left foot and cuts; Robert Ervans, mechanician for Jackson No. 26; John T. Glover, mechanician In Weetcott Js'o. 7; C. L. Anderson, mechanician in Case No. 8, and TeddyiTetilaff, (driver of Lozier No. 34. Carl Fisher, president of the speedway company, says ther will be no more motor races at the speedway this year.
