T. W. Englehart president of the
South Side Taxpayers Club, who lncl-
dently resigned from the Gary Commer
cial Club at their meeting last Friday night, because the club Indorsed the re
ports of its committee appointed to in
vestigate the Gary franchise for extending their lines on Washington
street, from the Calumet bridge to the city limits. In a letter to Thb Times ex
plains his attitude in promoting tho franchise. Mr. ' Englehart says: "In order to give the people a clear Idea of the street car situation in the Ridge Road district, here are a few things which will show what we have
been up against for the past four years: "We were held up by the bridge and the road for two years because the contractors were more than a year behind In their work. Next came the Gary & Southern fight which Involved more than a year of fighting in the courts and ultimately resulted in tho permanent tie-up of the road south of the river so that the entrance of any city line to the district by the main route Is completely cut off. "Again the Geist franchise was granted, making no provision whatever for service south of the river, and finally, -the offer of the Gary & Interurban. the first definite relief in sight, was rejected by the Commercial Club, thereby cutting us off indefinitely.
"To the people of Gary: Does this
look as though we are being given a
quare deal? After paying as much
axes as any other part of the city are
we getting anything near as much? There is not a public utility In the way
f gas, lights, water or street cars in lght.
The street car situation means
everything to the territory. We now
ave 1,500 less people here than If we
had given cars two years ago. Knowing
ow Important street cars are to us.
why are'we not given equal consideration with othef parts of the city? - -
"The Gary & Interurban franchise
urned down by the Commercial Club
would have ben the only solution of
mmediate service. We do not care
who builds the line, but we want It at
once and not thre years from this time,
The commltee of the South Side Tax
payers' Association accidentally drop
ped onto the franchise on the day we
went to Chicago to see Mr. Geist. It
was the same franchise acted upon by
the club that was read at the Geist
dinner and ther was no joker in it
We werft not trying to "slip anything

. ADVERTISED MAIL. The following letters remain un
called for in the, Hammond postoffice
for week ending May 29, 1911:
Miss Florence Asselin, Dr. Brand-
over" on the people. Had It been granted, it would have put the Gary & Interurban on the same level with other
roads on the five-cent fare basisnothing more. I believe that the Commercial Club is in favor of Oeist's franchise and that the Gavit franchise was turned down for the sole purpose of enabling Geist to freeze out the Gary & Interurban quicker. "Granting tnat Geist gets control of the entire district and established the best service In the country through a big merger, we may get good service, I believe we will, but it will take time
and there will be two or three more yrs that wo will be without cars, meanwhile we will be paying top notch taxes with nothing in return. "Should Gavlt have been given the franchise, even at the cost of the three
cent fare clause and the provision for a bonus of five percent of net earnings to tho city, it would still bo possible for Geist to buy his sys and .why should the Commercial Club be interested In making the price cheaper for him at the
cost of the development of a part of
the city? i
"The five percent clause will never amount to anything for It will always
go into Improvements and the road can
not be successful on a three-cent fare.
"I have resigned from tho Commer clal Club and I do not intend to crltl
cize, but I do not belive that the club
goes far enough in its purpose. I have
never known it to be guilty of bringing
an industry to Gary but It has stirred
up a great deal of trouble which is now
keeping newcomers out of the city by
making public things which could have
ben fought out at home.
"Gary is now I na position for great
development in every district, but this
cannot be done unless all parts of tho
city work together. Trouble will come
up, of course, but the representative
men of the city should get together In & i;oom and fight it out without spreading the smallest difficulty all over the
country and allow reports to grow to absurd proportions. Right now there is
a booster club ready to organize that will try to bring this thing about. There are 25 men erady to start the
club. It will not knock anybody nor
conflict with any other organization.
Its object will be to secure Industries
and get fair play for every district
which is more than has ever been done
before in Gary." T. W. ENGLEHART,
