GARY CLUB DIOT3E8

The meeting of the Gary Commercial club last night, called for the purpose of discussing the franchise of the Gary

and Interurban company for the extension of their line on Washington

! R00 street to the city limits, resulted in

I the club adopting the report of a spe

805 cial committee who were against the . passage of the franchise in its present

I terms.

liie reason that the franchise was looked upon with disfavor by the club was that the new franchise as presente dlast night by T. W. Engelhart, pres

ident of the South ' Side Taxpayers'

rlnh fnr the follnwine flinnft!

1

I 1. That the franchise did not pro-

,000 vide for a five per cent profit sharing!

J plan for the city, as the present fran1 chise of the Gary and Interurban now I in effect. i 2. That the franchise did not call 1 for a 3-cent fare or eight rldea for Si 1 cents as the present franchise. I 3. That the franchise did not pro2 vide an entry for all other Interurban I lines on the Washington street exten- ' slon. 1 T. W. Englehart Reale-aa.

One of the sensations of the meet

ing came after the franchise had been discussed for some time and after the committee had made their adverse report regarding the passage of the measure. It was then that T. W. Englehart

arose from his seat and, walking hat in hand to the table of the president and secretary, he asked that hia resignation be accepted forthwith. A vote was taken and Mr. Engleharfs resignation was accepted unanimously. Favor Immediate Relief. From the sentiment expressed last evening at the club meeting each member was In favor of giving the Rldga road district as speedy relief in the way of interurban facilities as possible, but there were several clauses in the Gavlt extension franchise that the) club considered unfair. i Mr. Englehart last night presented a franchise very different in terms than

the one that was read at the Geist dinner early in the week. By the terms of the franchise passed upon by the

board last night the 3-cent clause now in effect under the terms of the present franchise would be abrogated and

upon the completion of the extension a five-cent fare would be In force on

the Gavit lines until the expiration of the franchise.

3-Cent Clauae Abrogated. Thus for the compensation of Mr.

Gavlt building his line to the limits of the city on Washington street the 3cent clause would be killed and tha

company citizens would be compelled to pay a straight five-cent fare. Another thing that was left out of the franchise is that the city should receive 5 per cent of the net profits of the company. These points were discussed at great length a number of members of the club taking the position that any railroad company was unable to sell ita paper under the three-cent fare clause but when the vote was taken the members heartily indorsed the committee's action. t President Gavlt Talks. , Frank N. Gavlt, president of the Gary and Interurban, was present and stated that the South Side Taxpayers' committee had come to him after all other roads refused to build the extension. "We did not seek the franchise," said

Mr. Gavit. "We are not making the committee came to me with the proposition and I told them if they could secure a franchise would would in some way be an inducement for the cost of the expensive construction and no returns for years, we would build the road. But under the terms of our present franchise it Will be useless to consider it."
