East Chicago, Ind., May 26. Porta

& Downing, the contractors for the

improvement of Chicago avenue from Hohrnan street, Hammond, to Earing

avenue. East Chicago, has finished the

laying of the slag from Columbia avenue to White Oak avenue, which ia the boundary line between Hammond and East Chicago.

The slag bed has all been laid in Co

lumbia avenue as far as Gostlin street

and it is only a question of a few days

before the slag will be spread in Chicago avenue clear through to Baring.

The contractors are about to bring

up their steam roller from Crown

Point and will roll Columbia avenue at once, and from there the roller will proceed to Chicago avenue, where the

slag will be rolled. Portz & Down

ing are not yet decided whether after

this is finished to go on laying crushed

stone in Chicago and Columbia avenue, or to begin the laying of slag in Chi

cago avenue as far as Hohrnan street.

In any case it will be at least a month

and probably more before the street is ready for use.

Fred Gastel, who is in charge of the

work for the contractors, pointed out

that the point where the South Shore

swings to Chicago avenue. will be the most dangerous place for driving in Lake county. Already one accident has happened here, a limited South Shore train colliding' with a stone wagon a few days ago, taking off the rear wheels of the vehicle, injuring the wagon box, and losing Us own steps. It has been suggested that Hammond city council might confer a benefit on the community by compelling .U interurban cars coming from the northwest, the curve being within its territory to stop. From the east, there should be no more danger than at any other crossing ,it being the curve toward Hammond, which Is the treacherous point.
