CALUMET HARBOR BILL PASSED BY SENATE Springfield. 111., May 17. The Kleeman bill for a harbor in Lake Calumet to be built by the sanitary district of Chicago sailed through the senate yesterday afternoon y a vote of 39 to 0. It goes back to the house for covcurrence in a few unimportant amendments. It is In almost the original shape in which it passed the house, an effort on the part of Senator Jones to get the bill back to second reading, for amendment failing. Jnul's Idea Shot Out. In seeking to recall the measure. Senator Jones explained that it was desired to consolidate the Juul "sanitary" outer harbor bill with the Kleeman bill. Senator A. C. Clark of South Chicago at once let out a protest. "If the bill is recalled and amended In this shape." he said "it will mean the death of this needed industrial harbor for South Chicago," shouted Clark. In support of his protest, Clark read a petition signed by the South Chicago Business Men's Association, the Gano Improvement Club, the Allied Improvement Clubs of the Eighth ward, and the Federation of South End Civic Bodies. Aid to O'Connor Rill. Now that the Kleeman bill is through the senate the O'Connor "city" harbor bill is expected to find smooth passage through the house, while the Juul bill will die in committee unless by a miracle it should be reported out to-morrow and shoved ahead. MAN POLICE WANTED FOR YEARSJRRESTED South Chicago Man Gathered in By Police at East Chicago.

(Special to Thb Timks.) ' Indiana Harbor. Ind., . May 18. Geo. "Wendt, alias Edward Clark, -and badly wanted in South Chicago, where It is claimed there Is evidence of an incriminating nature against him sufficient to sen him to the penitentiary for a number of years, was arrested after a chase by Officer Ed. Shields last night, near the Lake Shore depot. Wendt was noticed by the ticket agent at the depot, who regarded his actions with suspicion." The man seem ed to be trying to induce foreigners at the depot to accompany him outside the building, and those who went out volunteerily he followed. The agent suspected, that his intentions towwl the foreigners were not of the best and notified the police. Officer Shields was sent to make the arrest, but the moment Wendt caught sight of him he ran. Shields followed in hot pursuit and after a brief but exciting chase fell on his man and took him to the police station. He gave the name of Edward Clark, but was recognized by Officer William Hughes as George Wendt. whom he had seen serving a sentence .at Crown Point, where he had been sent from Whiting. Communication with Chicago resulted In the information that the man had been living at 9992 Avenue M, and the police requested to hold: htm until officers could be sent out to take care of him from the South Chicago station. Prior to his arrest a number of reports had come in to the police station regarding what appeared to have been contemplated holdups by two strangers. One of the men who reported was Merle Klynn, who was stopped at One Hundred and Thirty-eighth street , and Euclid avenue. Flynn managed to get by without being harmed,' although he felt certain the men had evil designs upon him. He said he came to Indiana Harbor to look for work. He failed to explain satisfactorily his peculiar actions at the depot.

CARNEGIE r Gary is again assured of its public Carnegie Library. Librarian L. J Bailey of the Gary library received a letter from Andrew Carnegie, written by his Private Secretary James Bertram today wherein he stated that he would willingly add $15,000 to the original donation of $50,000 making a total of $65,000 for the completion ol the new library which will be erected on Fifth avenue opposite the Y. M. C. A. Bulging. When the bids for the library build ing were opened a few weeks ago by the school board It was found that the specifications were so incomplete that the cost of the uilding would exceed the appropriation. This did not in clude the heating of the buildring or its furnishings. The additional appropriation of Mr. Carnegie will now enable the board to go ahead with the erection of the building and will cover all costs completely. Mr. Bailey stated this morn ing that the bids would be received by the board the first week in July. The golf links, situated on the south of the club house which can be oerlooked by the spacious porches will cover 70 acres of ground. The grounds was once used for meadow purposes and with very little trouble can be conerted into one of the finest links In the country. It is the intention of the club to sew hundreds of pounds of grass seed and fertilizer after rollinitf the same with a heavy steam roller. One of the remarkable things about the golf links is that the whole course can be seen from the porches and members not wishing to go out in the sun can witness every play behind the 'screened veranCas. Although no action has been taken by the hoard of directors of the club concerning the admittance of members of the old Tolleston Gun Club and Indiana Society it is more than likely that they will be enlisted In the clubs membership. Yesterday President II. S. Xorton and several other members of the club were in Chicago and purchased furniture for the porches and lawn, swings and hammocks and lastly a fine piano with player attachment for the parlor Work of improving the grounds has already started. The gardens are already made ,in the stable Is a fine jersey cow and horse and the poultry yard is well supplied with chicken3 and ducks. The improvements to' the grounds fnd club house, will be the building of driveways leading to the club house the installation of a water system. The building of a garage or sheds for automobiles, the screening In of the erarcdas and countless other minor improvements which will add to the comfort and convenience of tho members and beautify the surroundings. MR. PAYNE IN PAIN. " (Special to The Times.) Indiana Harbor, May 18. James Payne is experlt-ncing his surname in large chunks this mprning. The wherefor of this is that yesterday he' was sentenced to six months at Crown Point for drunkenness, disorderly conduct and using profane language. Of course it was Judge Itiley who soaked him, and Mr. Payne thinks he never heard of so mean a man. Judge Riley would not have been so hard on Payne had it not been for the fact that his arrest on Tuesday was the third within a ve$k for similar offenses, escaping punishment altogether on the two previous occasions. It was time, his honor thought, to cure him of his habits of drink and profanity. Also of the notion that he could do as he d pleased in Indiana Harbor. Payne is a follower of the Hoyal Amusement company, which is holding a "carnival" on tiie old ball grounds, this city. LANSING.
