Arguments are being heard in tfc cases of the state of Indiana vs. Kelly et al. in the circuit court this morning, and the case went to the jury at noon. The case has been hotly contested and W. J. The case of John Caldwell, charged with being one of the alleged conspirators who are accused of padding the payrolls of the Indiana Steel company at Gary, will not be tried at this term of court. Hoffman was born in Monongahela, Pa., 30 years ago. After having finished his preparatory studies five years ago he entered the McCormick Theological seminary of Chicago with the idea of preparing A year ago, however, he was called to Hammond as the pastor-elect of the First Presbyterian church,' and seeing a splendid opportunity here, he ac cepted the call. During the year that he has been coming to Hammond he has laid a foundation to take up the work in earnest and to devote ail of his time to it. The congregation is congratulating Itself upon having Mr. Hoffman for its pastor, and he surely begins his pastorate with the best of wishes from all. Word from Dr. Mary Jackson in Chicago reports that she is getting along nicely this morning and that she is improving daily. Mrs. McCoy, who returned from the bedside this morning, reports Dr. Jackson as having spent a quiet night and that she is resting easily. Building Permit. Ra.d Nfiws Frnm TTnmA. The six million dollar fire in Bangor, Me., yesterday destroyed a district in which Francis Cooper, one of the Hammond mall carriers, was well acquainted. Mr. Cooper formerly lived in Saco, Ma,, a little town near the city which was visited by the fire. i Play Tie Game. A baseball team composed of clerks In the Gibson offices and a team recruited from the other railroad offices in Hammond met on the H. A. A. grounds last. Saturday afternoon and played a tie game with a score of 4 to 4. Only fine and a half innings were played, the game having been called on account ot darkness. Enright and Eder were the battery for the Recruits, while Morris and Kerger were Gibson's battery. The Recruits had AMERICANS FIRST
never played together before and consequently believe thej' put on a remarkable game against the Gibson team.

Mr. and Mrs. George Manderbaek are preparing to leave tomorrow for Laporte, where they will spend the summer and rest after their toil of an arduous theatrical season. Considering the poor theatrical season through which the whole country has Just passed, Towle's opera house under Mr. Manderback's management has done remarkably well, but it has only been by reason of the utmost diligence on the part of both Mr. Manderbaek and his wife that this end has been brought about. The board of public works thisj morning passed a resolution which provides for a sidewalk on Hohman j street from River street north to Gost lln street. Changes in the sidewalk grade are necessary to some extent because of the new bridge, and the property owners decided to supplant the brick with cement. The contract for the 119th atreet sldewalk was awarded to the Ahlborn Construction rnm nji n v ? A petition from Charles Arkln, asking for permisison to erect an electric lamp post in front of his place of busines3 this post to serve as an adver tisement for his business, was referred to the city council. Permission was granted the Simplex baseball team to play ball in Douglas park next Saturday. LAST DAY OF 1910 TAXES City and county taxes paid after today will be considered delinquent. t aa the term for taxpaying closed today. The delinquents will have to pay an additional ten per cent for their delay. The city treasurer's office force worked to full capacity all day long. So busy were they that William Wolter. the city treasurer, instructed the telephone operators not to call his office today. Compared with other, years the taxes are quite well in.
