OPEN EVERY EVENING. of bituminous coal every day, and the freight rates that the steel trust paya for hauling the fuel from he Pennsyl vania mines amounts to a small fortune daily. Every bit of coal Is ground to a powder form before it is baked in the ovens which are heated at 2,600 degrees. Gary coke will be used . by the . local blast furnaces and at the western mills of the steel corporation, thus obviating the necessity of getting coke1 from the Connellsvllle region. To make one ton. of pig iron two tons of coke' are required and a Gary stack Willi product 450 tons of iron dally. Waste Gaa a Problem. Just now the corporation official' are puzzled over their surplus gas sup ply. Gas that formerly went to waste in the blast furnaces is now used t produce electricity to operat the mills and as a result no coke gas Is needed. Late, the tin plate mills will be operated by coke gas. Unless purified, coke gas is not of the right quality for. illuminating purposes, but it Is excellent as a heat producer and some day the steel corporation will probably heat every home in Gary at a, very low cost. Today through Its subsidiary, the Gary Heat, Light and Water company. It charges one dollar per thousand cubic feet for Illuminating gas. Because the surplus gas from battery No. 1, which consists of seventy evens. Is not needed three million cubic feet of gas Is wasted every day. This is gotten rid of by means of a huge stand pipe which discharges a. flame thirty feet long into the air. The light from) this Illuminates all surrounding territory and can be seen for miles on Lake Michigan. When the eight batteries of 6S0 ovens are In operation it is expected that the surplus gas will make the night Into day.
