GARY HS FIRST COKE YESTERDAY

Gary's fourth big industry, the United

States Steel corporation's coke ovens adjoining the blast furnaces and steel

works of the Illinois Steel company,

produced its first coke last niht.

Gary as a Coke Center. The material came from battery No.

1, which consists of 70 of the 560 coke

ovens whjch make up the works.

"With the entry of Gary as a coke

producing center western plants of the United States Steel corporation will de

pend upon the Indiana steel center for

their supply of this material. Long

hauls from the Frlcke ovens in the

Pennsylvania' fields will be eliminated

and as the steel . business advances In volume the ovens at Gary will be added

to.

The new ovens were built at a cost of

$8,500,000, construction work on them

being started in June, 1909, by Superin

tendent J. C. Lowell and assistants. An

operating force of 830 men will be re

quired to man the ovens.

Annual Output 2MKMH0 Tons. Their annual production will be 2

500,000 tons of coke, besides millions

of dollars worth of by-products, such

as coal tar, ammonia, etc Besides this

sufficient gas will be generated by the ovens to operate all of the mills in

Gary.

Some idea of the immensity of the

ovens may be obtained when it Is con

sidered that 7,000 tons of bituminous

coal will be used .every twenty-four hours. The coal will come from the

West Virginia and Pennsylvania fields,

as the Indiana coal is not suitable for

coking purposes. Before the coal 1 placed in the ovens It is ground up 1

order that fusing can be successfully

accomplished. "

Most of tne Gary by-product coke' will

be used In blast furnace production.
