(Special to Thb Times.) East -Chicago. Ind, April 12. Mayor
A, G. Schlleker has issued his proclamation for Arbor and Bird day, which
will fall on April 28, and great preparations are being made for the event In the public schools.
The children are manifesting the
greatest Interest in the Arbor day plans, as well as in the prizes offered for the best kept homes, gardens, etc. The superintendent has arranged the contestants by streets and finds that on almost every street tn the Twin Cities, there are one or more children en
tering the contests. About 800 have
given In their names up to the present
time. Many of them have already giv en proof that they mean business.
Fir street, Alexander and Magoun
avenues take the lead in the number of children enlisted. It looks now as if there might be some beauty spots on
all the streets.
"The greatest disappointment Is that
so few people are planting trees," said
Superintendent E. N. Canine. "Trees will grow if properly selected, planted and cared for. The board of education will plant about fifty trees around the
various buildings and a few others have ordered from one to twelve trees
for private use. "Mayor Schlleker wisely calls for a "clean-up" day as well as tfee planting. Everybody is interested first, because the paper, tin cans and other rubbish
mar the appearance of the city; again
11 refuse thrown on the vacant lots
and In the alleys are breeding places for flies and other Insects that carry
disease -to the children and grownups.
"Some of the school children are taking charge of vacant lots and in some
eases a room has banded together for
the purpose of cleaning up, but there it no compulsion upon any child. Whatever he does Is voluntary."
All citizens and organizations are invited and urged to join with the juniors in these activities for a cleaner and
more beautiful city. "
East Chicago. April 12. Whereas, The governor has designated Friday, April 28, and Friday, October 27, 1911,
as Arbor days; and
Whereas, The state board of health rules designate May 1 of ach year as cleaning up day; and Whereas, The board of education, the Commercial club and all others Interested in the welfare and beautifying of our city are interested in tree planting and otherwise enhancing the appearance of our streets and lota; Therefore, I request and uFge every public-spirited citizen to take part on the above mentioned' days in a general cleaning up and tree planting program either as outlined by the above mentioned organlaztions or Individually.
