On Sunday, March 25, marks the first, real practice and tryout of the H. A. A. j baseball team, and it is expected by Manager Ketchel that a large number of new players will be present to get
berth on the H. A. A. team.. The reason of these early practices Is
preparation for some interesting
games which have been booked with
the Cherokee Indiana on April 22, the Chicago Grays on April 23 and the Chicago Union Giants on April 30.
This makes the twenty-second base
ball season for the Union Giants and the other two teams have also a wide-
known reputation. These games are expected to be good tryouts for the
H. A. A. team, and not only that but It will be great entertainment for the Hammond public for those that have
seen the Union Giants play will have
to admit that they are better than any vaudeville show.
Smiling Jimmy McMahan, as he is
known to Hammond fans, will be in a
H. A. A. uniform next Sunday at the H.
A. A. park, which is great news to the
Hammond league team.
McMahan two season.-, ago pitched

LEGAL NOTICES.
games to his credit. He pitched two
full games against the strong Benton Harbor team and won both games.
The H. A. A. team is exceedingly fortunate In having so hard a working player and also popular in baseball circles. Wagoner, who was to catch for the H. A. A., has a good call into another league and has signed up with the Clinton, 111., team. In his place has been secured Homer Hudson, who caught for McMahan last season In the
Northern Indiana league. With these two players as the battery whose past records show a strong battery and fielding average, things are promising good for the Hammond league team. W. H. Crawley will also be tried out for backstop. He played last year in one of the prairie teams. Crawley is a cool-headed player and well known here. ! Arrangements have been made to secure several other new players which they have in view and if successful in signing them up the Hammond league will have a team to be proud of, and it Is to be hoped they will be the team to hoist the flag at the end of the season. It has been the policy of the H. A. .A. team to sign up all the local players that can be secured, so as to make it a team composed only of Hammond players.
LEI THE FOOLS; RULES OH JUDGE Denver, Colo., March 24. Jimmy
Gardner and Johnny O'Keefe did not participate in a prize fight, or an illegal sparring contest, in the opinion of Magistrate Cornelius J. Gavin, and they were discharged from custody at
the hearing before him yesterday mornino".
The two pugilists were arrested
Wednesday on complaint of the Den
ver Christian Citizenship Union.
Judge Gavin, who is nothing if not
frank, and who usually refers to a
spade as a "spade, expressed himself
quite plainly on the subject, and like
wise censured the Y. M. C. A.
In discharging the men, he said to
Attorney H. K. Edwards, who was act
ing for the Citizenship Union: , "Why Is It that' these little affairs that are nulled off almost nightly at
the Y. M. C. A., where the admission rr its members every Saturday even-
sion over me in Australia. If the fight!
had not been stopped, however, I believe I could have gone along and won j from him. He is a great boxer but not j
tr.e gamesi ngnier in tne world and a fellow who can stick with him for a ways ought to beat him. "Jack Lester, the man I sent to Australia to fight Lang. Is the best of the "white hopes.' He will beat Lang and then I am going to challenge Johnson for him. Wolgast and Moran stand together at the top of the lightweight class. The Briton is the only 133-pounder who has a chance to win from the Cadillac man. "Joe Gans was the greatest of all figHters, irrespective of class or weight."

Winnipeg, Man., March 24. Tommy Burns, former heavyweight champion of the world, passed through Winnipeg today and stopped oft just long enough to deliver a speech about the stars of the ring game. , Tommy had this to say about famous fighters, past and present: "Jack Johnson is a great fighter, but the next really good man he meets will defeat him. Of that I am sure. I think Jack is going back fast. This long rest will do him no good. "Sam Langford, though a much smaller man, will have a great chance to defeat Johnson if they meet, because the champion is taller and will not force the fighting. Kaufman is not strong enough to cope successfully with the champion. "Johnson was entitled to the decl-
