First overtures toward the settlement of the Gary building strike, as

represented by a proposition of the union bricklayers, will be laid before the meeting of the Employers, Builders and Material Men's association tonight. It is said that the plan of General Vice President Preese if accepted would go a great ways toward settling the strike, but employers declare it would mean in part a return to old conditions and a knockout blow for their open shop ideas. However, the hope is expressed by some that there will be some settlement secured and efforts toward this will be made tonight. The bricklayers" plan, it is said, would call for the return of the carpenters, bricklayers, plasterers and other unions back to their old Jobs with the resultant dismissal of the non-union men now employed. While it would not be a complete return to old conditions it would be essentially that.

client in a personaf injury case by a contract In which the lawyers agreed to pay th cost of the client's room and board until his case was either settled or a judgment had been secured. Other Stories Told. Other cases are told of the activity of runners who get wind of personal Injury cases and either direct the client to the attorney or introduce him with the understanding that he is to get a percent of the Judgment. The lawyers themselves are not so bold as to go out after business, for they realize that they would be jerked up by the Bar association if they did so. Some of them, however, are not averse to making deals with the notorious "runners" about the city who live from hand-to-mouth engaged in the

business of getting attorney and client together.

It is this situation that will be tak

en up by the lawyers of the city and county who would like to pee the prac

tice of law in Iake county placed on

a higher plane than It ever has been before.

It is not a question xf jealousy on

the part of the reputable firms of the

county, for most of them have all of the business they can attend to. It is solely for the purpose of giving the lawyers of Lake county a good reputation In the eyes of the members of the state bar. When the matter Is brought up an interesting discussion is likely to be precipitated.

MAY BE INVESTED

That a movement is on foot by an English syndicate to purchase many grain elevators In small cities along the Erie railroad is the explanation suggested by Erie men for the visit of Sir Thomas Price, a man prominent in the affairs of British South Africa, to Huntington Sunday in company with a party of Erie officials. Minute inspection of elevators along the line was made. Xo time was devoted to going through those in larger cities, even though of bttter construction. It is argued that, had his trip been only to secure ideas as to modern elevator equipment and construction, he would
