HOW THE NEWS WAS RECEIVED III E. CHICAGO

(Special to Thb Times.) East Chicago, March 4. The news

that Mayor Schlieker, Chief of Police Lewis,- City Clerk Walter Spencer and

Julius Friedman had been Indicted by

the grand Jury was received in East

Chicago and Indiana Harbor with

varying sentiments. But the general consensus of opinion seems to be that there is many a slip between the In

dictment and actual guilt, and that

while true bills were found there may be some difficulty In convincing a court and a Jury that the charges therein

are true.

Of course, rumor has been rife to the

effect that the true bills were in pickle

for some time, so the news that they had been returned can scarcely be said to have been a surprise. The Indictments are the talk of the town, as a matter of course, and there Is much speculation as to the outcome.

fire department. After much persuasion on the part of Chief Feeley of the Gary department the trustees. Messrs. Olander, Carr and North, last night bought the original Gary Are department equipment for $450, which is onehalf of its original cost. The chemical engine will 'be duly Installed and a fire company ( volunteer) will be organised within a short time. A final settlement on the new city hall was made to the contractor by the, trustees.

CHICHESTER S PILLS THB DIAMOND BRAND. A

Result of Meeting.

The fact was made very plain at the

meeting of the Hammond Business Men's Association in Hammond that the contractors and business men in general have no quarrel with the crafts

they claim have been reasonable.

Even the union men present admit

tod that there were some of the unions

that were bad and that ought to be dis

eiplined.x This resulted in the putting of the following question, by W. C.

Belman; "Would you work with non union men in the crafts that are ad

mittedly bad rather than compel the eeneral public to put up with the

abuses?"

James Nedjl, the national president

of the bricklayers union, admitted in the presence of those asembled that

the union men would work with non

union men rather than have the public submit to conditions that have been Imposed by the electricians, steamfitters and plumbers and other crauo.

Act On Xedjl's ramu j It Is this understanding that has re-j suited In the declaration of the open , shop against the above mentioned crafts. There are two alternatives for :

the union men of the city who have not been placed under the ban. One Is to work with non-union men and the other is to strike. . Do Xot Feel Secure. The contractors claim that so long as they have to deal with tho electricians, steamfltters and plumbers, sheet metal workers, lathers and plasterers under present conditions they will have no security from constant agitation and

petty strikes. They take the position that a big strike that would settle the j whole open shop question would be pre ' ferable. j The news that this big question is toi be precipitated on or before April first (

will be of the greatest importance to the community. Those who plan to make Investments want to know before hand whether or not building activities are going to be interrupted. As shown In Thb Times issue yesterday there Is $415,000 worth of building already projected. It is said that a
