MEYER, A''y for Plaintiff. Indiana Harbor, Feb. 9. The mostj eloquent eulogy ever delivered at a funeral In Indiana Harbor, was Rev. H. P. Ivey's address at the obsequies of the late Judge T. M. C. Hembroff yesterday morning. A feature of the services was the reading by Judge Virgil S. Relfer of Thb Times account of th well-known Jurist's death printed Monday morning. Rev. Ivey had the assistance of Rev. E. O. BradBhaw and H. A. CarpesAer. The eulogy based upon the text, "He being dead yet speaketh," Heb. ,11:4, follows: "-.... Friends and Neighbors: We have met to do honor to our departed friend and distinguished fellow cltlsen. We esire to mingle our notes ofsympathy and our words of praise with the tears of those whose lives are filled with sorrow With muffled footsteps the Messenger has come among . us and has taken so suddenly from our midst one whom we loved, ere he had attained to the full maturity of his splendid powers AS the sun had not yet reached high meridian on that morning when his soul slipped out through the door that the silent Messenger had opened, so. likewise, the dayrstar of his use fulness, and his well deserved honors, had not yet reached the zenith, but were ever mounting higher While the pavements were still resounding with the sound of his footfalls, and when the echo of his cheering voice had scarcely died out In our ears, we wre sorrow-stricken with the sad news that our good friend had left us, and we could not even say "good-bye." The closed eyes, the sealed Hps, and the folded hands, are convincing evidence that the report as true, an not false as we had so fondly hoped. For we all reausea tnat in tne passing or our friend a family had been deprived of a loving husband, and a kind father; that a son and brother upon whom much depended had been taken that w had all lost a frien who was widely known and honored, and universally love and respected. Nor as this all. - For we knew that the bar had lost a member who was the embodiment of the highest ideals of the profesison; that the fraternal orders were bereft of a true brother; that the city had lost her foremost citizen, and that th entire region, of which we are all compo nent parts, had been railed upon to give up a man whose life was linked with every movement which had for its purpose the betterment of every con aition, and tne prosperity of every worthy cause. We are here this morning mourning the untimely death, as we see It, of our departed benefactor. I humbly accept the Invitation extended to me to speak a few words to the honored memory of my friend and yours. Gladly would I give place to my friend.' to the honorable judge, here, or to other members of the bar, to members of these fraternities, or to some business asso ciate, who by reason of longer acquaint ance and more intimate association, could express In more forcible words and more meaningful phrases the true greatness of the life of the deceased, and the' incalculable loss which we have sustained, and which we all feel so deeply. But as a friend of Judge HembrofT, and as the pastor of his stricken family, 1 am here to say a few simple words of tribute to him; and to bring a message of cheer and comfort and hope to these who are so sorely bereaved. And permit me. If it be necessary, to kindle In your hearts a purpose that shall spend Itself in your honest efforts to bring about the things for which he stood, and for which he so manfully fought until his strength was gone. He is dead. His soul has silently slipped away to the realms beyond. HI body we will tenderly' bear away today to lta final repose. We shall not see his face again, nor1 hear his vole in audible tones. But may we ' not eay truthfully of hint, as th sacred

JUDGE HEOBROFF
writer said of on now long dead, "Ha being dead yet speaketh." (Heb. 11:4.) As a member of the bar, a splendid type of man la th profession, he was wis In counsel, keen in perception. clear In logic, forceful in oratory, convincing In argument, right In his conclusions, conscientious In his motives, just In his decisions, and honest in his judgments. And these characteristics won for htm that high position which h early merited and has so well held. A a publio citizen fre took leading link, w hailed him as our chief. Nor do we (fear a challenge when w say he was the foremost In our municipality. We gladly and proudly .claimed him for our own, and tried to bring to him the honor du him. But we willingly shared with every city and town In this populous' region the benefits of heroic efforts, and th glories of his splendid achievement-. He was interested in the city's political welfare. Ha wti' a cltizen-polltlcianl He was In politics not for what he could get out of It so much as for what he could put Into It. Judge Hembroff exemplified In his Ilf that truth in which w so strongly - believe, viz: That a man doe not have to go Into politics, but from th Vry fact of his being a citizen h la already In politics. With citizens It Is noL a question of going nto poltcs, but how shall we conduct ourselves theren. Let It bo said . to the memory of . our deceased fellow citizen that h honored th political profession by the active part which ha took in politics. For such a llf he had been already rewarded; for right doing and right living la Its own reward la part. But had h lived new and greater honor would have been his. For In the hearts of an ever Increasing host of admiring frlenda and fellow citizens was this purpos well formed. HI Interest la th Industrial and commercial life f this region was marked. These Interests '., wer upon his heart. He had toiled With painstaking car and self-sacrificing devotoln In this cause. In every new enter prise his oplnoin was sought, and most eagerly awaited. And,, be It said to hi credit, that In th inajortty of Instances his counsel wu readily aceeptod, and his policy adhered to .And in the loss of s-h a: leader our heart, are sad. As a nemtet of tr three fraternal orders to whie he Belonged we know him to . have been a brother, not only In name, but also In deed. His kind heart, warm hand, hi personal Interest in the welfare of others, his brotherly spirit, his wfllingnoss to lend asslstenc. whet-ever and whenever he eould, made of him a true brother, and a friend universally beloved. Ait man we hold Judg Hembroff up as the embodiment of many of those splendid qualities that go to make up true manhood. He wm a man who loved his home, and was deeply Interested In It welfare. A loving husband and kind father; a worthy son, and a brother greatly beloved. In the social life of the city ha had won for himself th highest esteem, and was' j loved and honored by old and young 'alike. He had allied himself with those movements among the young people. ' that have for their purpos the lntel- ! lectual development and th moral cul i ture which heighten the ideals, ennobl the ambition, and widen the scop of usefulness In service. His high sens of honor, his integrity of purpose, his clean life, and his manly ideals mad of him true friend, an Ideal neighbor and a manly man.
