San Francisco, Cal., Nov. 22. A cloud of gloom settled over the training quarters of Battling Nelson yesterday when he recevled word from Tommy Ryan that he would be unable to come west and second the Dane for his battle with Owen Moran Saturday. The Battler wants to be trained to the hour for Saturdays clash with the Britisher and has made every attempt to go into the ring with an advantage on his opponent. It was this that prompted the Dane to seek the services of Ryan, who has long been known as one of the greatest handlers of pugilists.
It is the meeting with Moran that is
worrying the former lightweight cham
pion and he knows that he must de
cisively defeat Moran in order to get a return match with Champion Ad Wol-gast.
Nelson has but one ambition, and that is to get another chance with Wolgast, and appreciates that it is up to him to prove that he has not "gone back,"
dui is as good as he ever was. He
will have a good pull in the weghts,
but the Moran admirers believe that the cleverness of their boy will more than
offset any advantage Nelson can show. That Nelson proposes to make a hur
ricane boxing bout out of his affair with Moran is plainly Indicated by the
way Nelson is going about his work. If he loses to Moran he-will not be
able to say he was not in shane.
Yesterday the Dane boxed nine rounds, three with Marty Kane, Walter Scott and Dick Wheeler, and at ttm
conclusion of this severe test he displayed no particular signs of fatigue and appeared as if he could step forty more rounds. Nelson showed improved speed, and the chances are he will be much faster when he faces Moran than he was whn he recently faced La Grave. Like Nelson, Moran is working at top speed for this bout. Owen does not always train faithfully for his bouts, but this time he can be relied upon to be in the very best fettle. Although the battle only a few days away there has been but little betting. The few wagers that have been made were around the even money notch, with Nelson supporters coming to the front. Although Nelson has displayed wonderful aggressiveness In his training, he fears defeat with Moran unless he can secure a veteran such as Ryan to outline his plan of battle.

MINNESOTA MAY ! CAUSE BREAK 1911 Michigan Contest Still in Balance. Ann Arbor, Mich., Nov. 21. Asked tonight if there is any truth in the rumor that football relations between
Michigan and Minnesota are to be sus
pended. Prof. Evans Holbrook, chairman of the board in control of athletics, admitted that as yet there ls no con
tract for agreement with the Gophers next year.
'We are unable to say at this time
whether the relations begun two years ago will be continued or not," said
Prof. Holbrook.
Both Minnesota and Michigan are
extremely anxious to play the game,
nosv. The sight of the blood discouraged Otto, but he battled hard in the third and in the fourth it looked as if he would surely finish the Californian. That famous right swing of Otto's thudded time and again against Powell's Jaw, but Lew merely shook his head and kept plunging in for more. The sixth was Otto's last stand. He had the better of this sesison, tut the seventh marked the turning of the tide in Powell's favor. His rugged attack wore Otto down.
