SEELEY APPOINTS DEPUTY (Continued from Page One.) John B. Murphy of Crown Point as his deputy there. Seeley will have to appoint a deputy 1n Hammond before long. It will therefore be seen that the appointment of deputies in the offices of the county officials will not be made for some time. When they are made the chances are that there will not be many changes. Broadening to the legislative offices, the chances are that neither Gavit, Van Home or Grimmer will have the opportunity to make any appointments this year on account of the democratic complexion of the house and senate. These appointments, however, do not amount to much. Congressman E. D. Crumpacker will have several important appointments to make. He has appointed F. Richard Schaaf as the next postmaster of Hammond to succeed William H. Gostlin, and the lamented death of Captain Elam of Valparaiso will make it necessary for him to appoint a successor to him as the postmaster of that city. For tha past month East Chicago and In diana Harbor have been shaken by terrific blasts, which have rattled windows and deafened ears, at frequent intervals. The blasting has been in progress for the purpose of breaking up the two hundred ton salamander in the blast furnace, which is in process of demolition preliminary to reconstructing it. The big salamander has at last succumbed to the persistent blasting and is now almost entirely broken up. The job will be finished inside of two days, after which the bricklayers will be set to work to do their part of the job. This work will be rushed with all possible speed and it is estimated that with reasonably good luck it will not take more than twenty-five or twentysix days. A few more days will then be occupied in finishing the job. It is expected to be blown in about the first of the year. The broken fragments of the big salamander, which has required so
