franchise which the Gary common council wants to give to the Gary and Southern Traction company granting It

the franchise. However, they will ask
for minor changes.
Monday night the council gave the

glad that the traction muddle is to be
cleared up. Ever since last June when both the Gary and Interurban and the Gary and Southern besieged the city council for a grant in the below the river part of the city the residents of
suspected that Eddy's elder brother had forgotten the "incumbrance," or that failing to see him, had concluded he had gone home. Eddy came to about 11:30 and finding himself In the hall, which was plunged into darkness and locked, he began to holler for help to get out. There is a rumor to the effect that, democrats being rather scarce In these parts, members of the party had decided to seize upon a few youthful future voters and lock them up in an effort to train them to the principles of Jeffersonianism before releasing them, and that Eddy was the first victim.

Mayor K-notts did not like the idea of the company having a grant from the commissioner po he detailed police to stop the company from beginning its work. Several lively pitched battles

(Special to Tita Times?.) East Chicago." inn., Oct. 26. Things were pretty dull at the meeting of the democrats held Monday night at democratic headquarters in Chicago avenue.
The most exciting event of the evening was the falling asleep of Eddy Berry, aged thirteen, and the excitement incident to this occurred later after the meeting had broken up and the precinct committeemen had all gone home. It was then that a passer by heard strange noises proceeding from the storeroom devoted to democratic headquarters. In the silence of the night
the noise.r were blood-curdling, and the belated pedestrian was not sure wheth er to attribute them to a ghost, some animal or a human being. He communicated with Chief of Po
lice Albert Lewis, who in person came
down to Investigate the strange sounds.
Upon breaking into the building Chief Lewis found Eddy, who had fallen asleep during the deliberations of the
politicians.
Eddy, who is a son of Dave Barry,
145th street, accompanied his brother,
Dave Jr., to the meeting of precinct committeemen held during the early
hours of the evenlnjr. As he was not
deeply absorbed in politics he soon fell
asleep, while his brother and the rest of the committeemen discussed the sit
uation.
When the meeting: broke uo it Is
avenue, and is directly opposite the
site where the $125,000 federal build lng Is to be erected.
This structure contains one large
store room and two apartments on the
second floor. Foundations are so designed to admit of a third floor and It is probable that the addition will be built in the very near future.- A "gro
cery firm wll occupy the. -store room, Have Much Money Invented.
Mr. Sharp, the new owner, is one of the Ohioans who has invested
heavily in Gary improved property
He owns the Calumet building on
Broadway 1 and Is also interested in
several well paying ventures.
George E. Brant, the late owner, is a brother of the owner of the Brant
apartments. In fact, the Brant broth
ers have invested very heavily in
Gary real estate. Market Is Improving.
A better feelh.g is noted in the
Gary improved real estate market
Last week the Gary Brokerage ajd
Insurance agency figured in some im
portant residential deals and numer
ous sales were reported by the Gary Land company. Other large deals are pending on south end holdings, especially that part below the Little Calumet fiver have taken on a well de
fined boom now that the Gary & Interurban. has extended its street car service down Broadway to the Little Calumet river, and the speedy award of the Seaman franchise insures good transportation facilities to that region. Miller property is also on the boom.
Since it has been learned that Fifth avenue is to be extended to Miller, real estate values have taken on a little color. The staid burghers of the little town adjoining Gary on the east are now platting their hay fields into choice lots and they are having available buyers.
