I were fully one hundred who were un-' able 'to get seats, but who managed to

crowd into the hall, to swell the throng and contribute to the enthusiasm. Altogether there were present between 250 and 300 voters. It was primarily a Lithunatn gathering, but others besides Lithuanians were present in nnumbers and there were speeches In various languages, every speaker being applauded to the

The Michigan City team outweighed Hammond by several pounds but the Hammond team was fast and its clever execution of the forward pass made

up for the difference in the weight of the two teams. J Murphy, left end, and Taylor, the J Hammond fullback were the players whose exemplifications of the forward ! ! noo. tvia YTW'Vii era n 'tir sit 11 ri RTld '

seven or eight times and was good for consistent and frequent gains. At one time the Hammond team was

within 10 yards of the Michigan City goal but while Van Guilder has been trained to do the punting for the team he is not very experienced and the Hammond men were afraid to let him try the kick. If the Hamond team had had a good punter it would undoubtedly have won the game. At no time did the Michigan City boys endanger the Hammond goal and the nearest they got to it was 30 yards. This leads the local enthusiasts, . who saw the game, to believe- that Hammond has the better team and if

another game were to be played the local boys would be able to score against, the eleven from the neighbor- ' ing city. Not only was Murphy able to make the forward pass beautifully but he was able to break up the forward passes that were attempted by Michigan City. Van Guilder at right end, "Whitaker at quarter, Graves at left half, Taylor - at full back and Crumpack'er at left were all deserving Of special mention.

"Respect for Dignities."

The Rev. Frederick E. Hopkins of ; First Congregational church, Gary, said, in part, in a sermon yesterday: j "The Bible warns us against speak-' inf? evil of dignities. By dignities it means persons and things that ought to be respected. "If there is anything more common than for men and women, and even boys and girls, to sneer at things we used to consider of as much importance as the dikes of Holland or the fortress of Gibraltar, what is it? "If our statesmen are liars, our politicians grafters, our business men mer-

i cenarxr altogether, our coruts corrupt,

our churches and ministers the tempples of Pharisaical snobbery why should j we go out Into the world to say to the ignorant, the oppressed, the heathen, Look at us!' Could anything be more audacious? j "Instead of encouraging a propai ganda of pessimism and despair, why

not aim a few straight solid blows at the people who are always finding fault without country and its institutions. Let us keep our eyes on a certain program and govern ourselves accordingly. For what can we expect but poor business at home and abroad."

WILl AUCTION TICKETS. Everything is in read'uiess for the opening of the big bazaar tonight, which is to be held this week in Assembly hall, for the benefit of Holy Angel's parish.
