BOARD AND ROOM.

WANTED Boarders. 243 Indiana ave..

Hammond, ilnd. 22-3

The padlock which secures the. outer

iron door, was sawed open and the in

ner door was forced.

Once inside the bank the - thieves

turned out the electric light and set to- work to dig their way through the wall to the vault. The fact that they did this makes the police believe that

they were not experienced robbers as hese vaults are all cement and steel

lined. The thieves having gone

through the brick wall, found that they

were up against a more serious prop

osition in the cement and steel which

latter constitutes the vault proper, and decided to give it up. They next turn

ed their attention to the vault door

and had already sawed off a knob that

they evidently believed to be the end of the hinge pivot, but which according to the bank officials was an orna

mental knob.

As soon as Sergeant Hughes and Officer Daniels noticed the irregularity

in the light, they went to the front door, which is up a few steps, and looked inside. It was dark as a pocket,

and they heard no sound, so they went around to the rear dor to see how things were on this side. What they

found was enough to cause their hair

to stand on end. The sawed padlock lay upon the ground where it had been thrown by the thieves and this to

gether with the . broken inner door,

told the story.

The officers entered the place at

once, but the thieves had fled.. They imedlately notified Cashier Carlson and he put on h,is clothes and came In hot

haste to the bank. Having ascertained that access to the vault had not been

secured, he went away soon, after, con-

iderably relieved.

The police have no clue as to the

identity of the thieves, or if . they have

are not giving out the information.

This is the first time in the history

of Indiana Harbor that entrance to a

bank has been secured by .thiees. . .

The attempted robbery haa created a

big sensation in Indiana Harbor,
