A city is known by the character of
its mercantile establishments. : When
there Is a lack of competition, when
the people of a community are indifferent as to what they buy and when a city la behind the times, the fact is re
flected in the shops and stores about the city. -.
The metropolitan character of Ham
mond's large stores has been remarked
by visitors from out of, the city. Its
small stores are not as up-to-date as
those in Gary and other neighboring
cities.
The reason why Hammond's big
stores have made progress is apparent. Hammond is close to Chicasro.
Its merchants are compelled to carry a large and varied stock of goods in
order to meet the competition of the
Chicago merchants. "
But the basic reason is Jhat Ham
mond's proximity to Chicago has given this city a touch of metrppolitanism that is reflected in the demands of its citizens. Hammond and Chicago make
their demands for new things simul
taneously.
The result is that the Hammond
merchant has learned that .he can't
foist last year's styles on his customers without losing their confidence.
They demand this year's innovations.
So this urgent demand for the latest.
This demand, backed up by the alter
native of buying in Chicago, has made the Hammond merchant alert. Every year his stores become more attrac
tive: His stock is more complete. This
accounts for the fact that in the whole
state of Indiana no more progressive merchants can be found than those who are now doing business in Ham
mond.

Special Attention Given To Small Orders f
Tel. 265 Cor. Columbia Ave and Summer St. HAMMOND, IND.
Th information has been received in Hammond that Joseuh O. Morris is
about to let the contract for the grading of ten acres of land in the vicinity
of the new east side park, east of Co-
lumDia avenue, and that k he yill at once commence the construction of a
number of fine homes with the idea ofl
selling them and encouraging building
activities in that section of the city.
This will be good news to the people
or tne east side who are anxious to see that section of the city built up
and improved. Morris will take advan
tage of the fact that the park is to be
located next to his holdings and ex
pects to cell out all of his property.
Morns was the man who laid out
what is known as the Standard Steel Car district. It is understood that h
will not sell the property in his new
sub-division to the foreigners, but will
dispose of it to the class of people who
will build good homes.
They lagtny out of this sub-division
will extend the built-up portion of the city, east of Columbia avenue, for the
first time in the history of Hammond.
The erection of houses in this locali
ty will have a tendency to improve the
iiiiciveumg property ana will go a
long way towards improving the city.
Incidentally it Will provide the city
with new houses that are so badly
needed. Morris has the idea that a fine
residential district can be built nn in
the vicinity of the new park, and it
is said that only under the consideration that the land be used for a park was Morris willing to sell twenty acres
to the city.
