AT STATE CAPITAI..' - Indianapolis, Ind., Oct. 7. Republican state candidates are making an ictlve campaign throughout the state, "and reports from various counties say that they are making a very favorable impression wherever they go. Early In the campaign they met and formed i side organization of their own for the purpose of co-operating with the state committee in doing their campaign work. There is much for the candidate to do in a campaign, and it was not believed to be necessary for the state coaimittee to be burdened with the details of the direction of their work when the candidates themselves are all seasoned and practical politicians who know .the game and

how to play it. Thy did not need' to be. directed -,ln -their, work. -AU that was necessary was to outline general policy for-, the campaign and they would fall right in with it. ! So they organized, themselves to carry out the details of the work which

they were to aa rney appointed a committee consisting r of John E,-Reed,

i candidate for state auditor, and Ed ,V-

j Fitzpatrick, candidate for re-election

as clerk of the supreme, court, to make

up a list of assignments of the various candidates to-visit the counties of the state and assist in organization work. The assignments were completed and the candidates worked in conjunction , with the state chairman in attending these county meetings, two of which ! have already been held In each coun-;ty- . ' j It is not doubted that much good i has resulted from these visits by the candidates. "They have met the . people and-.-the-.people--have -had a good

opportunity to become acquainted with them. They arc still', on the go and

meeting more, of the . voters of the

state, and will keep on going right np to flection 'day,. They -have been able to help the local organizations straighten out .many of the kinks that appear in every campaign.

, For about a week Finley P. Mount, candidate for -attorney-general, has been with Senator Beveridge on his

re-elected and is putting in his best licks to.,bring -about that result,. He is a good organizer, as has been proven many times In the campaigns, in which he has taken part. He "is 'assisting in tfhe organization work of the

party in this campaign and his influ-

enve will surely be felt. About fifteen of the republican editors of the state held a conference at the state headquarters and made reports on conditions in their districts. It was a noticeable fact that these reports were optimistic, even more so than they were at the former meeting a month ago. It was reported from

some of the districts that there had been some local troubles, but wherever this vfacs the case it was found to be true also that the democrats were having their troubles. In most of the places they said these troubles had been smoothed out. The questions of policy' for the lest of the campaign also was discussed. Some of the papers had not been publishing much political matter up to this time, and this had caused com

ment on the part of the democrats, who said that some of the republican papers were sulking. The republican editors resented this imputation. They said they knew conditions in their own locations better than any one else and that they knew when to begin their campaign work. They said

They form a valuable squadron in the fight, and are reciving close attention. . , It is conceded that the republican state ticket this year is made up of excellent material. The democrats are not making any attacks on any one of the candidates because they are a lot of clean, able men. Therefore, when

HE DIDN'T. STACK. It is the custom in some country ho tels in Pennsylvania for the guests to

jpile up their dishes as a signal to the over-worked waiters that they have fnished their course. An irascible

scuthern gentleman, who was nd. familiar with this custom, waited some time for the dishes to be removed after he had finished the first part of his meal. .Finally,' in a rage, he ihouted" to one cf the passing waiters. ' Here, you "black rascal, what do you mean? Why don't you take away these things?" The waiter stopped and looked at the complaining guest severely. "Why don't you stack, sar?" he demanded.

W. J. Bryan, who was in this city yesterday, said he would not discuss the liquor question outside of Nebraska. He declined to make any
