Knit Chlrago Prond of Her Succew. East Chicago is considerably set up by the fact that of all localities in the Calumet region, it was chosen for the erection of the new J600.000 power

plant, to be built by the Northern Indiana Gas and Electric company.

While East Chicago has thriven j

apace, and has many evidences which bear out this statement, in the location of numerous big industrial plants with

fits that naturally accrue by this process to the merchants and other tradesmen of the city. It will moreover be the means of building up a heretofore unsettled section of the town. This,

however, is merely incidental. It is as

an indication of East Chicago's future !

i general importance, hat the incident i of the city securing the big plant stands pre-eminent. 1 More care and attention are being paid today by the leading real estate

developers of the Calumet region to

establishing values on their properties

than at any other time In the history of the island. The investment seeker and the home

buyer have learned to discriminate between the good and the bad in real

estate and idemanded something more than ploughed streets and lot" stakes.

The result is that those companies that put In ubstantlal improvements and build houses in sufficient . number to establish the character of the neigh

borhood are doing the best business today and are gaining a following that justifies the expense and care devoted

to the preparation of their properties. ,

Leading officials of both companies have thrown down the gauntlet and with the announcement of the building of the plant, It becomes apparent that an enormous project has been launched that will result in the supplying of cheap, convenient power from a local pla,nt. , The Calumet region will no longer

be dependent upon foreign concerns for electricity, but will have a plant of its

own of which it can be duly proud.

Probably the most important feature of the project is that the manufactur

ing concerns of the region, and those which may locate here in the future, will have power supplied to them at a

lower cost than they will be able to produce it by steam. As a stimulant

for the expansion of the manufactur-

dent of the Northern Indiana Gas &

Electrical company, with a representative of The Times today, regarding the alleged fight between the Lake Shore & South Bend Railroad company (commonly known as the South Shore) and the Northern Indiana Gas & Electric company, Mr. Geist had this to say today: "I feel that I should make a clean statement to the public at this time, giving forth the facts as they exist. ."For the past year, the South Shore Railroad company has tried Attfvforee the Northern Indiana Gas & Electric

company to purchase ower from them, and close up our present power stations, and to prevent the building of a new power plant, at Eaet Chicago, in this way enabling the South Shore peo

ple to furnish all the electric power

used In northern Indiana from Michigan City to the state line west in

fact, just one year ago they began to

figure with us to serve us with this

power.

However, after much unsatisfactory

dickering, which has come to naught.

"The Northern Indiana has now ap- j

propruiiea jbuu.ouu 10 nuiia a power house a-t East Chicago. We have purchased the land, the machinery is being purchased, and we propose to push this power house and power' plant to completion as quickly as experienced men and money can push it. We believe we realize the wants of this community and are going to meet

them. J "We understand from a reliable : source that the South Shore railroad, through their agents, are going to ask for franchises in aHmmond, Whiting, j

hast Chicago, Porter and Michigan City. They have now a franchise before the council at Chesterton. "We do not believe the South Shore company is acting in good faith; nor have we ever believed it."

We have choice locations in the city which are attractive propositions with small cash payments, balance to suit purchaser.

now opened up, offering a large tract for the building of homes so much needed in the rapidly developing region around Calumet. Approximately fifty thousand dollars

have been expended in the development j

or the tract which embraces one hundred and twntv-fjve acres, streets having b-pn laid out and graded and sidewalks constructed,, and the immense

tract, six months ago a wilderness of swamp ana underbrush," now offers a presentable appearance well calculated to catch the eye of prospective investors. Tho necessity of. a home subdivision in this locality is obvious when H is pointed out that many new industries have been located in the heart of Calumet within the past few months, in addition to the older ones hitherto established, many of whose workmen now are obliged to live far frrm of their employment. With the new subdivision opened up apd placed on the market, a new era in the buildir. of home sis in prospect. Heretofore the territory has been for the most Dart so wild that the building of houses

wiinin ji. excepting on a verv few streets embraced in what is. popularly known as Oklahoma, has been out of the question.
