South Shore Interests Introduce Franchise at Twin
City Council Meeting Last Night Asking Eight to Furnish Light and Power.
(Special to Thb Times.) East Chicago, Oct. 4. The battle be
tween the Chicago, Lake Shore and South Bend railway company and the
N'orthern ' Indiana Gas a nd Electric company, for supremacy in the Calu
met region, is begun.
Last night the first gun was fired by
the South Shore line, when an application for a twenty-five, year franchise to furnish light, heat and power in East Chicago, was submitted to the city council. Application For Franchise. J. F. Lewis Meyers, general council for the interurban, had come down from Michigan City to see the launching of the project, but did not participate actively in the presentation of the franchise. This was attended to by a humbler attache of the railroad company's legal force. Not a ripple passed over the council
chamber when the franchise was ubmltted, and the document waa referred
to the street and alley committee with as little agitation as though,-it were
of no more significance than a request
to repair a break in the pavement of some aide street. The Argument Presented. There was no argument presented aa to why the South Shore line should be granted the favor sought. Not a voice was raised in Us behalf nor was any protest uttered. No representative from the Gas and Electric company was present. But the apparent indifference partook of the ' nature of the calm that preceded the storm, and before the council takes any action In the matter, the sluice-gates will ' be

be one of the most im-
fetcbed theory, for it would be up to
the Governor of the state to sign or
veto any repeal bill that might be passed. It is not believed for one minute here that Governor Marshall would sign a repeal bill if one was passed by a Republican legislature. Ie would undoubtedly take the position that the people, by electing a Republican legislature on this issue, indicated that they were opposed to the repeal of the county option law, and that he would not force a repeal on them that they did not want. At least, that would be the logical thing fcr him to do under such circumstances. So, it is pointed out, there need be no fear of a repeal in case of the election of a Republican legisltaure. But the interesting part of the whole
situation is that the Governor, has dragged the liquor question into the campaign and made it one of the leading Issues. It has all along been supposed that the people would talk among themselves on this question and that many of them would-be influenced in the casting of their votes by their position on the liquor question, but both sides had been hoping that .it would not come.to the front as a leading issue.
