Today the Jewish New Year (Rosh ,
Hashanah) is being . celebrated by
Gary"s Jewish population, the festivi
ties commencing last evening when services were held in the Jewish taber
nacle at the corner of Eighth avenue and Connecticut street. The services
for the three days' festival will be con
ducted by A. II. Zelisohn of Chicago,
who has been engaged as cantor. - He
will be assisted by Rev. Dr. Jacobs, who
has been engaged by the Jewish con
gregation in Gary. Services will be held again tonight and Wednesday morning. The holiday will close with a
prayer service.
Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New
Year, the first day of 5671 since the creation of the world- according to the
Jewish reckoning. The observance of
it is based principally on the tradition-'
al law as the "Memorial day." This day is considered one on which all the Jews of the world 'pass for judgment
before the Creator. :
Three books of account are opened
wherein the lives of the wicked, the
righteous, and those of an Intermediate
class (not utterly wicked) are recorded. The names of the righteous are immedi
ately Inscribed to live and they are so scaled, the middle class are allowed a
respite of ten days till the Day of
Atonement to repent and become right
eous, and the wicked are blotted out of the book of the living. The most interesting and most noteworthy part of the service is the blowing of the shofar (a ram's horn). .Every Jew and; Jewess over 13 years of age must hear the blowing of the shofar. The shofar is blown several times during the service, but the first time, which is the most Important one, it Is blown after a portion of the law has
been read in the Scrolls of Law. The reader and the rabbi are dressed in white, and most Jews have white "ties" on. The reason for it is: "Unlike the accused, who is dressed in black before the tribunal,' the Jews are dressed in white on the day of judgment, as they hope their sins will be washed off and they will get a clean verdict." After the service Is, over, greetings are interchanged, with saying "Le shanah tobah tikkateo," which means "Mayest
thou be inscribed for a good year." At home the table is set with grapes, other fruits and honey. The grapes or otherfrult are dipped in the honey and the following benediction is recited:
"May it please the Lord our God and the God of our fathers to renew for us
a good and sweet year." The feasting is in anticipation that the prayers. will be acceptable and in reliance on the goodness of God.

record of having never actually built a railroad since it was organized. Many Misrepresentation. . Purtelle tells a deliberate untruth when he says that franchise have been secured in all of the towns along the proposed route of the road for an investigation of the facts will show that the company has not the semblance of a franchise in Hammond and will not get one until Purtelle Is able to .' convince Mayor Becker and the board of public works that his company ia more than a wildcat oheme. Purtelle makes the allegation that his company has given a $9,000 bond to the city of Hammond to guarantee that it will carry out the terms of its franchise. The facts are that purtelle never has given, a bond to the icty of Hammond, and after he had been awarded aranchise on condition that he post $1,000 to guarantee the . building of the line.
his company was in such financial condition that it did not even post the $1,000, but allowed a valuable franchise
to lapse.

And after allowing his valuable franchise to lapse because the road could not raise $1,000 its promoters tell prospective stockholders that it Wits ample funds with which to carry on the work of construction. The business men of Hammond who have gone into Purtelle's record and who refused to invest in an enterprise that has no visible financial backing regard him as an adventurer. An inquiry at any of the banks in Hammond, that is a personal Inquiry, will reveal the fact that not one of them will take the responsibility of

recommending Purtelle's project to a prospective investor: Conservative business men regard Purtelle'a scheme as a wildcat enterprise at the present time and unless he is able vto secure responsible backing in the future it Is altogether unlikely that he will he given much consideration in financial circles here. CLERKS ASSOCIATION IN HEW ULTIMATUM
In violation or the state law several grocery men in the Gary Land company's first subdivision and ' nearly every storekeeper below the Wabash tracks keep their stores open on Sunday, ereafter they must close. This is the fiat issued by the Retail
Clerks association and every store keeper who keeps his place of business open on next Sunday when warrants
will be secured by the officers of the clerk's union. The decision to reach this step was taken at the meeting of the clerk's local last evening in the Gary hotel. For some time the clerks have been
"endeavoring to have the first subdivi
sion grocers abide by their agreement and many of them have but others have failed. As far as the south end is concerned most of the storekeepers seem to be in ignorance of the fact that there is a Sunday. .- "Yes, we are going after the storekeepers who do not close on Sunday," said President Youngs of the association this morning. "Warrants will be sworn out for those who violate the store. An inspection will be made next Sunday, morning and those who keep their stores open will be arrested."
