Members of the finance committee of Gary city council last night recommended that city levy be placed at $1.61 for the ensuing year, as outlined in the above schedule. Accordingly a motion was passed that the city attornay draw up an ordinance fixing this as the official' levy. The funds thus derived, plus the license money, will be expected to be enough to operate the city government for twelve months. Expressed in dollars and cents, this levy upon the assessed valuation of $11,827,465 amounts to $201,610.79. The city will also derive revenue

from the saloon licenses, dog licenses

and other sources.

Mayor Schlieker pointed out that the valuation of rrpei'ty in East Chicago was correspondingly low as ,oompared with that of the property in adjacent cities. The city he explained, was under far greater expense than in the past, and he enumerated the following sources of increased expense.

which accounted for the Increased rate.

In the first place the city under a

new state law is obliged to pay for the

improvement of street intersections.

These alone in East Chicago and In-'

diana Harbor amount this year to $20,-

000. In the past the owners of adjacent property have born the expense of this. Another important Item mentioned was the fire department, which has within the past year been changed

from a volunteer to a paid department

and costs the city $la,000 for its main

tenance.

Other things mentioned as a reason for the necessity of Increased rev

enues lnciuaea tne new public ouua-

lngs in connection with which was noted the taking up of $6,000 in warrants against the city hall; the increased expense incident to the enlarged police force which amounts to $5,000 for the year. The increased number of electric lights which have been raised from 62 to 121. and of the fire hydrants which have been raised frc 154 to 262.

ty of East Chicago and Indiana Har

bor is $5,S06,2S5, after deducting $101, i
