Dazzled by this amount of money which would have meant a fortune in Italy the parents of the girl made every effort to secure Davlso's money and they were successful It is said. Infuriated oer the loss of both his wife and the money is what is said to have caused Daviso to commit his rash act upon his so-called wife. " . ..

Most of the present younger gen
eration will have the title of great
grand parents accorded to them at such a venerable age they will undoubtedly witess the completion of the Broadway bridge over the Little Calumet river. It is declared that it will take such a time to do the work If it Is carried on at Its present rate of speed. Yesterday some Gary people drove down to the river and the sight they
saw was enough to blow up civic pride
with a bomb. With the exception of three lone cement plasterers not a workmen was in sight. Is'o large crew
of laborers were filling in the ap
proaches to the bridge, the concrete mixers were rusty and idle, and the
song of the crow was heard, and not
the noise of the oneumatlc drill ham
mer. Hobart and Mlllrr Traffic Cense
Why the bridge work is delayed' Is
answered by a host of explanations from the contractors and while the contractors explain the conwebs have
grown over the structure. Owing to
the lack of a crossing .at this point south end realty sales' have greatly
deteriorated.
Workmen who live below the river
must still use the ferry and those in
vehicles and autos have to journey by a verv circuitous route In order to
reach the place.
Traffic between Gary and Miller has ceased almost entirely and a similar dullness is seen lit the business between Hobart and Gary. To reach Hot-art a vehicle must sro to Black Oak and from there north to Tolleston Into Gary. This adds a total of twenty extra miles for the round trip.
Miller Klfy-Three Mile Away. Although the heart of Miller Is di
rectly three and one-half miles cast or the .Gary postofflce the present dis
tance, while the bridge is down, is
fifty-three miles for a round trip made
by an automobile or a heavy wagon. A
trail through the Kleventh avenue
woods east of Broadway and leading to tiiier is only wide enough for a
one-horse carriage.
To reach Miller now the traveler goes west through Tolleston gets in sight of Hammond skirts the woods north of Griffith passes Glen Park, journeys through Hobart rides along
the Porter county line includes Gary on his Itinerary and finally in Miller.

eral hours, and he too was unsuccessful. Dynamite was then tried. Superintendent K. D. O'Donnell of the blast furnace department at the Inland offering all the dynamite he had about the place. About fifty sticks of the explosive were set oft. The first shot
had the effect of bringing up a barrel of fish, but that was all. The succeeding shots, although In some instances five stick of dynamite were exploded at one time, were similarly futile and up to a late hour this morning, the body had not been recovered. Lew Payne and "Stubby" Staffort, experienced hands with dynamite were sent by Mr. O'llonnel to see to the firing o the explosive.
ANOTHER CALL FOR SKIN GRAFTS FOR BOY

What might have been the death of
four children by burning yesterday af
ternoon was averted when the presence
ol mind of one of the number saved the other three from the flames. The
scene was at Twenty-sixth and In
diana avenues in Gary on the property
of John Fisher. Those Who AVer Saved. The children saved from death are: Hary Frick, 2 years old. Clara Frick, 6 years old. Frank Fssmlster, 3 years old. Mary Fisher, 4 years old. " A hay stack is located on the Fisher property and the little ones were playing about it. One of them had matches and the lighted brand was applied to the imflammable material while the other vounesters were burrowed into
the hay. Smoke and flames rolled quickly out
of the burning stack and the children
began to scream. Clara, the six year old and the eldest of the four although choking with the smoke kept her head
and dragged the other three tots away
from the hay. A minute later the entire mass was enveloped In flames and by this time the shouts of the children h.-d attracted attention. When the grotn up folk arrived on the scene the youngsters were kissed several times by their scared mothers. The place where the fire occurred is some distance from a telepiione and so the department wfs not called. An odd scene was presented when the entire
neighborhood turned out with buckets, dishpans, and other utensils capable
of holding water. A number or snacks.
the homes of steel workers are grouped
nearby and it was to save these that the fire fighters turned their attention.
(Special to Thb Times.) Indiana Harbor, Aug. 5. It now develops that several square inches of skin will have to be grafted onto the back of Hayden Fox, the son of Wil
liam Fox, who was burned recently while playing back of Barker's Fair store. It was given out in the first place that the boy was not badly burnout again in a few days. Such is not however the case. If he is able to be out in four months, he will be doing well, according to his father and Dr. Robinson who is atending him. According to Mr. Fox the true facta of the story wero not made public at the time of the accident. He. dtclares that had it not been that Harold Barker, the son of Henry Barker proprietor of the Fair Store, used a quantity of gasoline, a fact unknown to Hayden
at the time, the accident would not have occurred. Without the knowlHarold went into his father's barn and placed this in a receptacle which he put under a barrel, and the pile was set on Are. The flames blazed up in an
Instant and caught young Fox s shirt.

Mr. Murphy says that he called the meeting for Gary without consulting the local democracy, and that it was done on the spur of the moment at the

The purpose of the meeting will be to formulate plans to unite the workers of the district and the principal point of discussion wilt be as to the best means and methods of electing Judge John B. Peterson of Crown Point to congress. At the last gathering of the district meeting was marred by many bloody combats.
