learn from them, but attend, for you will surely, at some point, learn some
thing and that will be just so much gain to you and to the community."
The modern idea of developing in the public mind a desire for knowledge on any given subject and a further desire for the commodity or the appliance necessary to render that knowledge practically of value is the most subtle
form of salesmanship. Whether this educational method is alwas profitable to the advertiser,, is perhaps not a proper subject for our inquiry, though the fact that world wide, so-called "educational campaigns," are continually carried on by
the most successful concerns, would Indicate that there is a good return ' for this enlightening "bread upon the ' waters. What does properly interest us, how

When every individual in a town and its adjacent communities may have an opportunity to gain, at little, or no expense, additional knowledge on some point of commercial or domestic economy hitherto unknown or unappreciated, nothing but good can result. We need not analyze the motive that inspires these opportunities to learn. Admitting it to be mercenary, it will not be successful unless those who come within its scope are not only

Labor will met in Los Angeles the week beginning October 3. Organized labor contemplates recommending a nine-hour day and a fiftyhour week for women at the next session of the Washington legislature. The constitutionality of the law requiring railroad corporations to pay
their employes semi-monthly has been upheld by the New York state court of appeals.
Final settlement was arranged between the striking cigar makers and the manufacturers of London, Ont., and all men returned at once. A satisfactory compromise was arranged. Fifty unions have affiliated with the
California State Federation of Labor during the last seven months. At the
next convention of the federation prac

The German government pays dam
ages to those injured on the state owned and operated railroads. Last year
these satisfactions amounted to more than $1,400,000. or four per cent on an
investment of 35, 000,000. The general assembly of Louisiana, has just given a decisive victory to the child labor law by refusing to entertain an amendment having for its object the exemption of all theateres and nickel shows. The French government has decided that it t1I1 be impossible to apply the workmen's old age pension law, which will cost the treasury more than $25,000,000 annually, until the last quarter of the year 1911. Because of the high cost of living, the
International Jewelry Workers' Union of America has drafted a new minimum
wage 'agreement calling for a 25 per cent increase.. Proprietors of union shops will be asked to sign this agreement. A union of washerwomen has been formed at Orange. X. J., with a membership of thre hundred. The officers an
