as much of that sort of thing- as should be tolerated, and I am going to put a stop to It If th thing Is possible." This expression of Mayor Schlleker's views with regard to horse beating, was brought out at the trial of Dan Shupa, who had been arrested not long before, charged with cruelty to an overworked, underfml animal Shupa is a peddier and lives In Wlckey row. Sergeant Leo McCormlck and office John Weifenbach arrested the

DAUGHTER INDUCED ATTORNEY
This weeks issue of the Chesterton Tribune prints an interview given by Judge John B. Peterson of Crown Point, democratic candidate for congress -from this district. Editor Bowser says that "if John B wins the congressional election . nothing on earth can stop him from being the next democratic candidate for governor of Indiana. The Chesterton paper even gives him a more rosier future than the late Lake County Democrat John B's original democratic backer. The Tribune says: John B. Peterson, of Crown Point,

democratic nominee for Congress from the Tenth district, was a Chesterton visitor Friday. lie was accompanied by his wife and daughter. They came to
attend the picnic given at the Knotts farm for the Lake County Bar association, and improved the opportunity by calling on old Chesterton friends. It may not be generally known, but it was Miss Peterson who decided the question of Mr. Peterson going Into politics. Both he and Mrs. Peterson were decidedly averse to his making the race, and both had decided that he should not consent to run. It was then Miss Peterson took a hand. Mis Peterson ITrgrM Him On. "Why, father, you are not a quitter., are you? It is now or never with you. The signs of the times are favorable and j-au've a fighting chance, at least. You take that nomination, and get busy. I just know you will be elected." That settled it with John B.. He couldn't bear to be called a "quitter" by his own daughter, and he felt that a woman's intuition had a mans Judgment, beat any day, so he said he would do his best, and the word was soon out that Peterson would run.

SHOCKING CRIME -IS
(Special to The Times.)
Indiana Harbor, July 8. Harry TTn-
cafer, 3433 Block avenue, a heater in
the Inland mill and said to have been
recently released from some penltentary, has been arrested, charged with a mistreatment of his thirteen year old
sister-in-law, Bessie Mischler. Mrs.
Annie Flint of Olcott avenue, is the
complaining witness.
The litle girl is in a serious condition, and a short time ago, her life was despaired of. She is still in a precari
ous condition, but this fact did not
according to the child's story, and the
allegations of her relatives, deter Un
cafer from mistreating, the helpless
girl upon every occasion that presented itself. She bore It as long as she could.
and then managed to get to Kast Chicago, where Mrs. Annie Flint, another sister resides, and to her she told her
story. She had kept the facts to her
self previously, through fear of her seducer, Uncafer having threatened she claimed to kill her If she reported hra conduct. The evidence seems unmistakable that the g;l has been foullj mistreated, but Uncafer denies that he had anything to do with her and he and his wife make counter charges against the Flints, with whom they are on bad terms, that they were in the habit of taking Bessie to saloons and compelling her to drink spiritous liquors. Mrs. Flint and Mrs. Uncafer are half sisters to Bessie. The former is the child's guardian, and Bessie lived with her until last March when she went on a visit to the other sister in Indiana Harbor. Here she became violently 111 shortly after she began her visit, and her condition was such that a consultation of doctors was necessary. Dr. Weiser attended her and he called Into consultation with him, Dr. Orf, and it was only by heroic efforts that her life was saved, he has been in an alarmingly fragile condition ever since, Is wasted to a shadow and is a most pitiful looking little object. Uncafer was brought into Mayor Schlleker's court yesterday afternoon for preliminary hearing, but a continuance-was asked and granted until tomorrow. The little girl was unable to walk to the city hall, so the police buggy was used to convey her to the scene of her trial. She was neatly dressed in white, and both of the Flints presented a good appearance In comparison with the Uncafers.
