Down in Miller the good people who fo to rest with the chickens have keen making loud complaints lately

about their nocturnal slumbers being disturbed. Heretofore they always slept pound with the exception of when these three things happened: 1. Whenever the Aetna Powder mills blow up; 2. On such occasions when a wolf from the Kankakee marshes makes its way northward and howls all night; 3. When the reflections of the Gary steel plant light up their bedrooms. Uncanny IJgrhta Near Cemetery. Of late ghostly lights have been seen In the marsh in the rear of the old cemetery. Those of the Miller ites whose business keeps them away from home until the clock hands near twelve and the gobblins are abroad have been seeing some mysterious lights in the nearby marshes. Coincident with the recent appearances of the ghostly 11luralnants it has been noted that the croaking of the frogs has almost ceas

noticed the lights and when they danc

Every one concluded that ghosts

must be hovering over the marshes for

not since the time the Pottowattomies

left the neighborhood have the bull

frogs been known to be so silent. This was the general theory until a few nights ago and mothers whose children

did not behave were warned that the

marsh bogy man would catch them

However, the marsh ghost has been made a fictional character by Fred

Schauff an engineer from Gary who Is employed on the Elgin, Joliet and East

ern railway. The other night Mr. Schauc went down to Miller and found the whole town all excited as the "ghost" was said to be abroad. I'nosnal Phenomenon Explained. Schauff ridiculed the ghost theory and about ten o'clock he made a quite little investigation for himself and after putting on his hip boots and tying a. mosquito net about his head he went to the marshes and this Is what he saw: Judga. William Westergren in hunting attire hunting frogs. The Judge was provided with a small gasoline torch. This he carried with him as the light blinds the frogs and makes them easy to catch. . Judge Westergren has been pursuing this occupation nightly for the past two weeks and he has caught hundreds of frogs which he has shipped to friends in Chicago. Of course his nocturnal expeditions were so regular that the frogs lay in wait for the Jurist and they tried to dodge him by keeping quite but the Judge was too foxy for them. EXPECT WORD OF

CENSUS ANY DAY

Any day now word is liable to come from the census bureau at Washington

naming Gary's population and fixing

its status for the next ten years.

As far as the Indiana laws go Gary will be denominated as a city of the fourth class. Such cities are those which have less than 20,000 and more

than 10.000. Some Gary people express

th eidea that now that Tolleston's est!

mated 2500 people is to be counted in with Gary's roster the population thermometer may climb up past the 20,000

mark.

If such were the case Gary would be

come a city of the third class and would

enjoy many privileges she would not get otherwise. However, such a possi

bility is a small one and those who

ought to know say that the total popu

lation will be rated between 17,000 and

19,000.

COMMITTEE MEETS.

Ingwald Moe and H. G. Hay were appointed by the Gary" Commercial club to look after the franchise matter in

Garv. Thev had a conference with

Mayor T. E. Knotts this morning

Knotts stated that he was opposed to the arrantine of bad franchises," and

paid he believed the people ought to get all they could for their money.

GARY BOYS EXPECT TO HAVE FINE VACATION

About the first of August the Rev. Fred and Mrs. Walton of the First Presbyterian church are going to take one hundred boys camping with them to Michigan City. Probably fifty of these boys will b members of Mrs. Walton's Sunday school class, the remainder will be boys from other parts of the city without reference to their church and religion The outing will be at Michigan City where there are abundant facilities for amusement and It goes without saying that under the care In which ths boys will go they will not come to any harm Arrangements have already been made for the gri-jund and tent9 will be secured and erected Those boys who already know about these plans would not miss this chance for anything and The Times feels assured that there are many other boys in the city who woudd be glad to go If there are any such boys they can obtain all the particulars

by applying to either Mr. or Mrs. Walton. All that they will have to J6 will be to take a few subscriptions to the Gary TiMEs. This v.ill be easy as the circulation of the paper is increasing every day and we are taking subscriptions without having to ask for them. If any Gary boys want to take In this delightful excursion by the lake eide for two weeks let them go to Mr. or Mrs. Walton, 701 Van Buren street and they will give them the necessary credentials to go out and earn this splendid two weeks vacation in good company and with lots of fun. Thb Times will not consider the application of any boy who is not recommended by Mr. or Mrs. Walton. Any parents who desire to have their boys obtain this health-giving and perfectly safe vacation should communicate with Mr. Walton or Mrs. Walton and obtain the pa''culars. Remember, boys, that you can earn this two weeks' vacation In a few hours. There are boys who have managed to get sufficient subscriptions to earn them this vacation in an hour or two.
